Espresso-stained oak floor and cherry stained island?
Comments (1)stain the island darker, and the floor medium-to barely dark. Reason: cherry has a nice muted look with darker stains and then less of the natural and uneven darkening is obvious with time/light effects. As you indicated, close to espresso is where you have to go with oak to really mute out that grain.....but on a floor, some graining in a brownish would be better. The all white cabs with some oak grain in medium would be warmer/nicer than so very dark flooring. Then with the island, you can do an interesting/contrasting top, because that cherry will probably take anything, color or pattern-wise....See MoreWhat stain for a rich, dark finish on white oak floor
Comments (6)A regular stand alone stain will not be that dense. You will have to find, a finisher that knows how to layer colors by pre-toning the wood with aniline dye and then your choice of stain color. In your case, pre-tone with ebony aniline dye and layer with antique brown or espresso. How well, the pre-tone is applied will be critical of the final stain outcome. If, you do not want to go that route. You will have to find a finisher that knows how to apply General Finishes water base floor stains. Water base stains has a short working time and can lap. Normal stains are not dense enough, even when pre-treating the wood by water popping....See MoreWhite oak with dark walnut stain
Comments (32)I agree with Johnson, another coat will not help darken the stain. It will only cause more headaches. What has happened here, is that the final sanding burnished the wood too much in some areas, closing up the pores. You can see the blotchiness. Water popping prevents issues like this, but it would make your color very dark. Try a 5:1 mix of natural and dark walnut. If, it is too yellow add a little gray. The best way to darken and even out the color is to redo the job . If, this is not an option. You can tint the poly with a little stain 20:1 poly/stain ratio, no less. Your finisher, will need to apply the finish as even as possible to avoid marks. Otherwise, it turns to crap and a redo will be necessary. This will be mainly dependent on the skill level of your finisher....See MoreHow to remove dark railing stain that bled onto white oak stair treads
