Please help: dark stain for solid quartersawn white oak?
Comments (5)glennsfc, we are on a timeline to get the kitchen done.... so I didn't push for popping of the rays with danish oil, or even water popping. Gotta draw the line somewhere! This flooring guy seems to know his stuff. Thanks peytonroad! Your pics are wonderful ---and your floors -WOW! We did a sample of the jacobbean and it was beautiful, but a little too brown for the cherry w/ dark stain cabs. So after looking at what others have used, we did a sample with 50-50 ebony and red mahogany, and finally went with a mix of 75% red mahogany, 25% ebony. It was just enough black to take the pink undertone out of the red mahogany. So the floors were stained today, and I love the 'custom' shade. It's perfect with the dark cherry cabs!...See MoreRed Oak Floors - What stain for a medium to dark brown?
Comments (7)Hi, I'm rarely on this forum but glad I came on! I didn't end up using the SW fruitwood stain. Our stainer did a great job though, he just put the last coat of poly on today. Here are some photos. It was a custom mix of (strangely) Duraseal's Ebony and Minwax's Red Mahogany, with lots of the Ebony on it. I decided to go darker than my above inspiration pic. This photo was from last week, prior to getting the last coat of poly and with LOTS of dust on it. It gives you an idea of the darkness....See MoreEspresso-stained oak floor and cherry stained island?
Comments (1)stain the island darker, and the floor medium-to barely dark. Reason: cherry has a nice muted look with darker stains and then less of the natural and uneven darkening is obvious with time/light effects. As you indicated, close to espresso is where you have to go with oak to really mute out that grain.....but on a floor, some graining in a brownish would be better. The all white cabs with some oak grain in medium would be warmer/nicer than so very dark flooring. Then with the island, you can do an interesting/contrasting top, because that cherry will probably take anything, color or pattern-wise....See MoreStaining white oak floors with dark cabinets?
Comments (11)Everyone probably differs in what they like in a wood. I don't mind the differences in color, I kind of like that, but I don't like the heavily grained boards that scream "oak", so I put the boards with the more consistant grain in the midde rather than all the light ones. Some people probably love the grain. It just goes to show how different it can be depending on who is installing it. I probably would have preferred maple, but some people think that looks like a gym, it is more modern, and it would not have matched the rest of house as much, or the cabinets, since it is even lighter than oak. You might have liked that better, though, since it tends to be lighter and more consistent in color, I think. Sue...See Moresandradclark
