Thanks for the feedback. I talked to the people at Artistcraft and they thought it would be feasible to do a fixed panel on the left side with a 6" high transom that was hinged to the top of the frame. The door would be hinged on the right wall and seal against the fixed panel and transom. Talked to the local shop and they said they would not do this because of safety liability reasons, even though they were quoting me on a framed enclosure that would have a steam tight seal. Is this really a good idea? I asked them if there wouldn't be a bigger safety issue with an airtight room. That's when they got snotty. I was hoping to use them since I live in mid-Michigan and would like to steer business locally. In the end, I think we'll do something similar to what annkathryn suggests. I'm not that thrilled dealing with the rude people at the shop, but they seem to be the only game in town. Beautiful work as usual, Bill. Here is a kind of crappy photo of our project. Thanks Archnista! You understood what I meant. I appreciate your feedback. To have one last go round on this to understand and compare my BF and I yesterday went to 2 places that I'm dealing with for the bath remodel and see if by staring at displays I could understand more. The first place was the place where I'm getting the cultured marble panels (and install) from. The other place is where I'm getting our Totos, all of our Grohe stuff, plus the lighting and some storage pieces. Both places have lots of displays, not necessarily exactly like ours is going to be - but close enough to depict the ideas. So, the cultured marble place says for a "swing out" door, we'd be looking at an "in-line" notched piece over the bench, then the "swing out" door, then another piece of "in-line". They do indeed do "pivoted" hinges, but we'd have to have enough depth to provide full swing in - that makes total sense. Also, the best possible thing is to have full swing on the outside or at least know what we'd be hitting - toilet for sure if we opened all the way. Also, the BF is worried that the wing out door would collect water and then deposit it on the floor, plus he feels that the swing in deal would mean splattering water outward if one of us enters or exits the shower while water is on (very likely since we do that tonight - i.e. shared showers.) The key thing that helped me was to see the "trim" aspects of the by-pass doors and in the trim type I like. It won't be too bad. I was picturing old fashioned big bulky shower frames of yesteryear. There's much nicer sleeker and contemporary stuff available now. Also, tomorrow the cultured marble guy and my GC are meeting over at the new house to go over the plans for the shower stall. At this point the bench is roughed in and by the time the cultured marble guy arrives I think the plan is to have the window roughed in too. And I think the plumbing values are also going to be roughed in. But I think they'll figure it out. The key thing is everything is down to studs and that means we they can get a clearer picture of what goes where, etc. Thanks for your help. I have to jump in this conversation! I just ran across a gorgeous pivot door while hunting at the salvage yard, and even though we aren't working on the kitchen, and I was hunting for a bathroom pocket door, and it's much newer than my original doors (single panel art deco vs 4 panel victorian), I couldn't resist buying it!!! We know our house originally had a pivot door at the kitchen, and had been debating adding one again, but the debate was swinging against it because we can't seem to work out a kitchen/dining room layout that doesn't have the door swinging into open space on one side, and although I happen to think one of the advantages of a door on the kitchen is no one can see if you've forgotten to do the dishes (since we don't have an "Alice"), I was also thinking about the safety issue and hadn't seen a door with a window in it that didn't look like it belonged in a restaurant. But this door won me over, totally original pivot, no window, wood is lovely, very heavy and has the rounded back edge already and a piece of hardware at the base, but I haven't looked to see if it's just the pivot pin. I've already changed other doors on the main floor (well there were only 2, one between the LR and the front hall, and one on the room I made the library) , swapping two of the 4 panel hinged doors for 15 light glass because its nice to be able to close them to zone the heat, but still feel open and let light flow in the house, and we added/plan to add matching pairs of 10 light pocket doors (replacing a missing pocket door some evil previous home owner ripped out and destroyed the pocket, but the evidence was there (darned "Modernizers aka remuddlers) plus add a matching set to finish & separate the dining room from the entry hall. So I can justify the shift in door style at the kitchen, besides, I think most of kitchen doors looked a bit different/simpler. (In case you wondered, the removed 4 panels were used elsewhere in the house where we added a closet and a bathroom. I'm excited about it. Of course it means I still need to go back to the salvage yards and find the doors I was supposed to find for the bathroom in the basement!! ;-) Oh and hello, I'm Hunzi, and I am the caretaker/obsessed owner of a 1884 Victorian brick vernacular farmhouse. Hi my bathroom is the same dimensions as yours, and the entry door is 23". After we installed the tile, the interior dimensions got a bit smaller due to the thickness of the tile etc, which is why we have 52" wall to wall at the shower threshold. Think about access to your valves when you decide on your shower door design. We couldn't move ours to the opening opposite the shower opening since a) it's an exterior wall, not recommended b) we would have had to build the wall out and would have lost space inside the shower. We couldn't move our toilet or sink, this is an apartment building.
