Window treatments
I just finished installing wainscoting my dining room and now need to decide on window treatments. The wall color is SW Reflection, the wainscoting is custom match to kitchen cabs and is a cool white. Looking to use drapes, don't want grommets. Any color or pattern ideas appreciated. Thanks.

Comments (3)Break this down into two steps to make it easier. Tackle function first. Don't worry about a valance until after you live with the shade for a while. Get dressed and go to the stores and play with their displays. Find one that give you privacy, but also works with your fan. Comments (5)I would do something simple like Hunter Douglas Duette shades in their opaque fabric with the top-down/bottom-up option. They can be easily inside or outside mounted, depending on space available. Here are mine in my master bathroom. See how I have the top rail lowered to be able to see outside, but rest of the window is covered, but still allows light through. Comments (7)Sorry I disappeared. Regarding the main objectives: Our location is SoCal, and a majority of our windows face the South. So a lot of sunlight. Blocking the direct light falling in house is important, but we don't want to cut it out completely making the house dark (for the living room, kitchen and other common areas), And in the bedrooms we do want the blackout. The house is not fully furnished yet as we moved from a small apartment to this place, and that project is a separate work in progress. But from a general preference standpoint, we like the Earth Tones in colors, simple clean lines with the styles, and natural wood options as much as we can. In the kitchen almost everything is stainless color. And currently the flooring is a combination of dark brown and grey, and the carpet is tan. But we want to change the flooring to a lighter brown+grey type of LVP when the budget permits. So, any window treatment that is kind of neutral and can work with the current flooring as well as future changes would be great. Not sure if it is possible to give any ideas based on this info. Comments (9)If privacy is important, I would get cordless inside-mount honeycomb shade because when they are up they take up very little space. You have a fabulous view, a roman shade will partially block the upper portions of your view, which to me are the nicest areas to look at. My second choice would be cafe curtains to hide the street and driveway, while making the most of the upper portions of the view. Solar shades are nice too, but will provide very little privacy at night....See More

6 years agoWhat's your favorite color? I'd add that to the room in the drapery fabric and use it as an accent color in the art and table dressing. Here they used coral against the neutral backdrop.
One with blue
One with gold
One where they kept the whole color scheme neutral.
But note how the color scheme is used throughout each room...the rug, the upholstery, the drapes, the art, the table dressing.
Some are more soothing, some more vibrant. Think about the mood you want to set.
Once you pick a color scheme...or flip through houzz and find an inspiration room, it will help guide your decisions.

6 years agoFull-length drapery panels and change the light fixture. All you light is directed up and when you set a table it's a good idea to have light focused on the food and table setting below unless you select a candle-style fixture. Your fixture is more appropriate for a kitchen IMO.

6 years agoBeverly and I disagree on lighting at the dining table. I find unless it is dimmable, downward shining lights will tend to wash out food colors and cast ugly hair and nose shadows on diners' faces. What you want, I think, is subtle and adjustable lighting. I prefer light to wash the ceiling, adding candles to highlight the food and people. I don't think candles would be unheard of in a formal dining room. Here's a good guideline on curtains.
