Miscellanous Hippeastrums 2nd set of 2011
Comments (29)Well observed! The MATURED flowers, of many Hippeastrums even, create the impression of the "seamless" and "completely rounded" CALIX or PLATE and I am inclined to baptize this seedling Amarena BALLS (again, and in remembrance of a sibling of Minerva x Picotee respectively) that had been nicely veined on white, rounded segments) but lacked the red edge DESPITE parentage of "Picotee". I shall definitely try to obtain seeds of "PapMinPic through self pollination. On ther other hand, the star-shaped Melusine x PapDon2 seedlings (a second is comming soon and reveals itself in the background respectively *g*) are in my opinion dead end hybrids, because their beauty is very "formal". Their color is very good though, rather blueish....See MoreFor Laurier Nappert
Comments (35)An increase of the concentration of CO2 in the air makes sense. Everybody who can grow a crop within a space which can be thoroughly sealed temporarily, might try this. All the more if they can provide a continual AND cheap supply of DRY ICE. This can be deposited in thick-walled shipment boxes for deep-frozen medical-research-goods made of styrofoam. As a rule of thumb, I found it out, there is an evaporation rate of approximately 25 grams per hour from Dry Ice being stored in these, at ambient environmental temperature. The resulting concentration in the air of the sealed room must be measured by a respective instrument, it should not exceed a level of, afaik, 0.1%. The grow-room must be opened and force-ventilated periodically, in order to remove excess air- humidity, and may be some traces of Ethylene produced by the crop too. The same considerations do apply if/when CO2, heat, humidity, and traces of Ethylene are being generated from a combustion device, which consumes Liquid-Gas. HAPPY GARDENING!...See MoreThe new H. Comments (22)Lovely photo! Thanks for sharing! One of the things I love about Hippeastrum blooms is the impact they make! The flowers are so large and the colors so wonderful, that you can forgive the fact that they only bloom once a year, for a short period of time. You're lucky to have a scented Apple Blossom! Not all have scent, and not very many Hippeastrum varieties have a scent. Jewel is one that supposedly has a nice aroma, though I don't have one yet, so I've never smelled it. I would say that only a very few hybrids have a scent at all... among them, Jewel and Apple Blossom... scent is just not top on the priority list when breeding them, I guess. I'm glad you've come out "lurk" mode! Welcome, and do join us often! This is the slow season right now, so posts will be sporadic, but it will pick up considerably once fall rolls around!...See More"Exotic Star" x H.papilio
Comments (36)The second scape... together with the two fully mature flowers of the first scape, one floret self-pollinated, the other pollinated from "PapDon2". Btw, self pollination of one floret of the first-blooming sibling was not successful, which was to be expected in a DIPloid, but the ovary of the other, after pollination from "Charisma" (TET) is swelling'! ------------------------------------------------------------ Here...See Morehaweha
