Smart doorbell and other accessories

I recently got a google home unit, and have developed an interest in getting a few other smart products. One is those little plug in outlets that can be operated by WiFi. Some of them specify that they work with google home.

another is the ring doorbell. I don’t currently have a doorbell so there is no wiring for the pro unit. I’m considering the ring 2 which runs on lithium batteries.

anything I should know about these that I may not have thought of? Experiences with any of these? Pros and cons?

I have the smart plugs and love them. I would like to have a Ring doorbell, but I refuse to pay for a cloud subscription to store the video. Once you do that, you are at the mercy of the company for a monthly fee - that they can hike anytime they like. I am waiting for a smart doorbell that I can connect to a DVR at home. THAT I would go for.

I have Ring. In addition to the yearly cost for cloud storage, you may need an internal chime.

I have both a nest thermostat and a ring pro. I have the 2nd generation nest, got in December 2012, and use it with a heat pump system. It does have one serious flaw if you use the autodetect away feature... Say its summertime, and you want your house to be cool at 6pm when you get home from work. So you program it to be 72 @ 6pm. Well, the nest is smart enough to know that when its 90 outside, it needs to run for 2.5 hours to cool your house down to 72. So at 3:30 it kicks on. But then after an hour at 4:30, the nest detects no one is home, so goes back into away mode and shuts off. So you get home at 6, and your nest has lot more cooling to do. I ended up disabling this "feature" :-| Ring Pro doorbell is good, but you really need to know the specs on your existing transformer. I hooked mine up and it worked, so I thought I was good. I didn't even know where my transformer was. 4 or 5 months later I started having problems, and only then discovered I needed a newer more powerful transformer, only after spending 5+ hours on the phone with tech support, and receiving three replacement doorbells.

Was your home pre-wired for an alarm or any other automation when it was built? If not, then you probably need to look at the wireless systems. Some also have video capability and other options, but it varies by vendor. Most have an option for wi-fi connectivity to support thermostats and other automation, and you can add 4G modules if you don't have a home phone to connect to the alarm company I am using a Honeywell Lynx 5200 system as an alarm, but have not added on modules for thermostat control, water sensors, etc. Honeywell supports Z-Wave devices, which means you can buy a wide variety of home automation devices (door locks, lights, etc.) to control. The newer Honeywell 7000 series supports local video viewing from multiple cameras, and supports more sensor interfaces than my older model. If you think remote video viewing is an option you want (to watch your house when away), the Honeywell does not have very good support. However, most alarms that offer remote video require a vendor-owned server that you login to view the video. The video is being streamed to their server and you are viewing it from there, so there is usually a fee. Alarm monitoring companies offer services to support multiple brands of alarm systems. However, monitoring fees vary widely, and sometimes there are local police requirements. For example, some police departments require alarm permits from the city, or have fees if they are called too frequently for false alarms. Having someone come in to clean your house or check on it while out of town gets more complicated when false alarms may incur a fee. Bruce

Yes you need a doorbell at the front door still. I've lived with gates. They don't always stay closed, you could leave it open expecting 10 friends to come over, you could decide to remove the gate or never close it in the future... Most people don't feel comfortable just walking in someone elses house, so you'll buzz them in the gate and they'll still want you to open the door for them. You could be in the basement or bathroom and not hear a knock etc

I have a Nest thermostat and Nest doorbell. TLDR: I like them. They work and were easy to install and integrate. If you can, connect them to your 5ghz wifi (more stable and stronger connection). Thermostat: I was initially worried about if I would actually get use out of the thermostat because I am someone who really dislikes the idea of a thermostat automatically changing its temperature based on activity or other "smart" functions -- I like my temperature to be steady and comfortable. So, I do not use the Nest's automatic schedule and just made a custom daily schedule like any normal thermostat can do. So obviously I am not utilizing the main feature most people get a Nest thermostat for. However, I have found it useful for being able to see a daily history of use (ie: how much the system uses heat or ac), plus I now have humidity control (steam humidifier), can change the temp when I'm away from the house if needed, and I love that from a distance I can look over at the thermostat and it actually lights up and I can see what temp it is at. There are a ton of other useful features that I know are saving on heating and cooling costs and I did notice a difference in comfort in my home. Doorbell: I really like being able to see when deliveries happen, I can watch wildlife from time-to-time, and avoid those door-to-door salespeople. I also get an announcement of who is at my door when they ring the doorbell, ie: "Mom is at the front door". It was very helpful to have when a service company arrived to my house early (before I got home) and I could talk to them to tell them I was 5 min away.

I have both as well.

i use the smart plugs with my Samsung SmartThings. They’re z-wave devices, but function basically the same way other than they run through SmartThings and I have much more control and customization with them. That said, they are awesome as are my switches and other sensors.

i recently bought a Ring Pro and installed it myself. My previous doorbell was wireless, and the button was stolen so it was time to replace. I went with the Ring Pro because I didnt want to deal with recharging batteries, abd I wanted to be able to view live video whenever I wanted. You can install a Pro without having a current doorbell, but you have to run wires, and you need a transformer. I opted for an ElK plug in transformer vs a hardwired transformer because all the reviews for every transformer suck. I figured if I need to replace it, I can just unplug it and swap the wires and I’m done without having to shut off a circuit. Running wires for me was pretty easy as I have a basement utility room just below. Your mileage may vary. I almost went with the Ring 2, but again, no live viewing.

I mentiones my SmartThings before, I have added my ring into SmartThings, and use the built in motion sensor to turn on my outside lights if it detects motion in my yard. Should make most people think twice about lingering around.

As Jim mentioned, if you dont have a current doorbell, you will likely want a chime to go with it. Ring has them for $50.

Also for the Ring, regardless of which one (except for brand new network cabled one) you need a pretty decent wireless signal at your door. That will affect the video quality and the cause for most complaints.

Regarding the subscription costs... I wasnt excited about it either, but I figured $100/yr was worth the additional security it provides. If it stops or helps convict one person from theft or break in, how much is that worth to you? On top of that, the subscription provides:

-Cloud storage for up to 60 days accessible from anywhere on any device. I dont need to buy a dvr, configure it, or open a firewall port for it.

-Unlimited devices (base plan is per device)

-And the main reason for upgrading to thr better plan, lifetime warranty on the doorbell. If its damaged or stolen, they’ll replace it for free.

Thanks for all the info.

Steve, what do you mean when you say that the ring 2 doesn’t have live viewing?

I’d probably have an electrician install the transformer and wiring for the pro version.

The battery only device live viewing only shows live video when someone rings the bell. The hardwired models let you initiate an ad-hoc live viewing at any time.
