Mystery Citrus Tree - Help ID
Comments (11)Well, the previous owners would not have known how to graft anything, so I don't think that is a possibility. It does remind me of a Sanguinelli, since it is only partially pigmented. However, my Sanguinelli is in the front yard, and very new - couldn't have cross pollinated, at least, not from my Sanguinelli. Don't think my neighbor has a blood orange, either. They seem to have more standard citrus in their yard. And yes, I thought the same exact thing about the rind - definitely a bit thicker. I'm so mad I didn't make a not of the branch I plucked the first fruit from. Believe me, I will be marking each branch from now on as I pick the fruit, so I can identify the branch these fruits are coming from. And Mike, thanks for the compliment. This poor little tree was in such bad shape I could not recognize what it was. In fact, the previous owners, who could not tell me what type of citrus it was suggested I just cut it down if I wanted. Felt pretty bad for the little tree, so I've been nursing it back to health to try to figure out what it is. And yes, I'd have a nice big pitcher of Meyer lemonade waiting for you :-) Patty S....See Moremystery lime-like citrus fruit in Houston - help identify
Comments (21)I have an update on the tree. The current owner e-mailed me, saying that it is, indeed, some kind of a lime tree, but that he didn't know which type. He is in contact with the original owner who planted the tree, and will get back to me with the information. He also said I can have all the limes I want, and offered to lend me his ladder :). If the original owner doesn't remember or I don't hear back, I will take the leaves and fruit for identification. The current owner's recollection is that the tree came from a local nursery, so it might be some common sweet lime. I will try to get better pictures....See MoreMystery citrus tree
Comments (1)An initial guess can be made by crushing a leaf and smelling it; lemons smell like lemon, oranges like oranges, etc. After that, post a picture, including closeups of leaves; with that we can narrow it down for you; but generally the final determination comes with ripe fruit....See MoreMystery Seedling (Possibly Citrus)?
Comments (4)It's absolutely not a citrus. I agree that it could very well be an Osage Orange, also called bois d'arc.....Latin binomial is Maclura pomifera. It belongs happily in the Moraceae family, along with fig and mulberry, and not even remotely related to citrus....See MoreDave in NoVA • N. Virginia • zone 7A
