Help with fireplace hearth
The developer that did our condo selected a very modern fireplace, and you can tell by the built-ins and molding that we prefer a traditional style.
We want to make the fireplace look more traditional and safer for little children and thought adding a high hearth would help.
Can we add a hearth to this fireplace to make the marble and black surround look less modern? Please share fireplace hearth inspiration!

Tile/granite/slate flush hearth options for fireplace - help?
Comments (3)Yes you should be able to get it...we got a one piece marble (same slab used in the surround) and it sits flush with the flooring. If it can't be done for whatever reason, then you should be able to get a carpenter to make a wooden bevel to match your flooring as a transition piece so you won't trip or whack your toes. Comments (10)Post a couple more pictures following these instructions and I can create some mockups: 1: Take a main picture from 8 or 10 feet directly in front of the fireplace at the level of the opening so it appears as square as possible so I can see the entire fireplace wall from floor to ceiling like in the example below. 2: With your back to the fireplace, take a picture of the room so we can see the décor. Comments (10)Not sure of the condition of the brick in your existing hearth but you might be able to salvage the brick, slice them with a masonry saw and lay your home made brick veneer into mastic. You should have two sides (two chances) to get a good piece from each brick. If you get enough good veneer slices, I think a herringbone pattern would look nicer...but would have more waste, so you might have to wait and see how many veneer pieces you get before you settle on a pattern...See MoreRelated Professionals

PRO7 years agosafer for children? how is putting a higher hearth going to make it safer? I'm also curious as to how they're going to hurt themselves with it the way it is? I mean, obviously if you have a fire going they shouldn't be left unattended, but what else are you thinking?
maybe it's just the photo, but can you measure the width of these two spots to see if they're equal? to me, it looks a bit off
6 years agoI don't think adding a hearth would improve safety for the littles (I mean, they could climb it and then it's both a burn and a fall/bump risk). Isn't it a gas fireplace? Does the glass get very hot? If so, I just wouldn't turn it on if the kid is in the room.
If you want to change it for aesthetic reasons, this type of hearth might be nice (round the corners though). The screen could add a barrier too, if you did want the fireplace on and a little more peace of mind.
