Laundry Room Design Dilemma Kitchens

Cover Washer/Dryer in Kitchen

My house is 100 years old so I’m glad to even have an indoor washer and dryer. Im not glad that it’s in the kitchen right by the fridge. There’s not enough space between the appliances to build a cabinet. Im trying to think of a solution to cut down on the noise and make it look a little better. I thought of a screened room divider but those are normally about 5-6 feet tall and my stackable is about 7. Any creative solutions?

Unless you build an enclosed cabinet, nothing is going to cut down on the noise. Even then, it will be minimal

Why would you say that enclosing it in a cabinet wouldn’t cut down on much noise? So, you think hanging noise blocking curtains would be useless?

I don't think so. DW uses much hotter water than washer. Even when I used my WD combo( the ventless one), there was no moisture to be felt around. The unit felt warm (enough to dry towel over it) on drying cycle but my dishwasher puts out more heat- it is old piece of wonder, fixed manytimes. Besides look at the build in ovens, even thou they vent up front, I'm sure there must be some heat in between cabinets. I wouldn't worry as long there is no water drip when draining. In europe we use appliances build in the kitchen for years.

Robert, While it is most likely possible to add a Washer drain and supply to your existing kitchen plumbing it might not be a good idea. Draining a Washing Machine and Kitchen Sink into the same line could cause you some serious blockage problems down the road if the line isn't sized for the drainage load. This is primarily because of the combination of grease and lint buildup. You did not say what kind of foundation your home has, if it is a basement or crawlspace the drain line could probably be replaced with a properly sized line that should work. Good Luck, Mstplumber

Remember that standard kitchen cabinets are 24” deep, and standard full sized laundry appliances are 32”-36” deep by the time you account for all of the hookups. They stick out as much as a full depth refrigerator, unless you do custom depth cabinets, or add blocking. They also need to be pulled out for access and service. Many of the enclosed laundry cabinets are designed for the compact Euro laundry models, not the full sized American ones. If you do not have it where you can pull out your dryer every couple of months to clean, you are creating a fire hazard! Washers also need supply hoses checked and replaced, and do occasionally need service as well.

Based on my personal experience, I’d put it under the dryer. Our main washer leaked, presumably due to sudsing and ruined the switch for the pedestal washer. Luckily the warranty covered it.

You're probably stuck with the noise no matter what you do. Here's a setup I may try in a bathroom that has a shower next to it. Curtain all the way across but stack the curtain in front of the washing machine. Alternatively, think of the situation differently. Europeans have laundry machines in their kitchens and don't seem to give it much thought.

You just might need to put cabinets above the laundry and refrigerator to get a more built in look. Right now that area looks a little bit unfinished near the refrigerator and washer and dryer. Take a look at these laundry set-ups in the kitchen to get an idea. I don't think the noise will be abated at all, but it will look more deliberate rather than haphazard.

I say that because it's the nature of noise. To cut down on noise, you need mass, and you simply don't have any place for a thick wall. It looks like there's barely 1 inch between the washer and the fridge; where would you put a good solid wall?

Do this: stick a child (or a radio) in a closet. Close the door. See how little difference there is in the sound level? And a closet is full of sound-absorbing clothes, which you can't have here.
