36' integrated fridge: Thermador Freedom or SZ 736?
Comments (11)I looked at Miele and SZ. Ruled out Northland (noise and lack of energy efficiency) and GE Monogram (I hated my old GE fridge). I also wanted fully integrated and paneled which left me really with those two choices, although I would have considered stainless if something had cost less and been acceptable. The Miele was more than the SZ. We have a snack station in the kitchen with a fridge freezer drawer from KA (also fully integrated). We took out the icemaker (we have a big icemaker) and it is more than enough freezer space for items you don't want to walk to get (ice cream, waffles, etc.). The rest goes in a large freezer we had built into our laundry cabinets. It is just a frigidaire and was not expensive but is huge and we put cabinets on top of it, pulled forward, and it is recessed between two closets so it looks built in even though it is not. It has worked very well for us (particularly since we would have had another freezer somewhere even if we had a larger one in the kitchen because I have never found freezer space in a fridge to be adequate for our needs and family full of boys and their friends!)...See MoreDacor 48 inch or Wolf 60 inch?
Comments (16)Not the OP but I'm still on here and a lot of water has gone under the bridge. I had the Wolf DF for about 4.5 years and the cobalt blue enamel came off of the bottom after running the self clean. This has been an issue, if you look at the lawsuits on these ranges built as far back as 2006. Quite a few posters had issues of chipping with as many a three ovens in a row. The all gas versions do not seem to have the issue (no blue interior) although they are mentioned in at least one lawsuit. I like Dacor platforms that were bigger too but the ovens I had were worthless. Mine were with the Discovery controllers at the time, different from some of the other ovens. They have since been bought by Samsung and been through model changes through the years. I though maybe they fixed them but there was recently a poster here that bought a wall oven and returned it quickly because they had issues with it. What type of cooking do you do? The Ilve has a few things that might cause concern for some people. The burners are all underpowered for what most people want now. Ranges like BlueStar and Capital have 22-25K on at least two burners. The Wolf all gas also tops out at 15K and you may have had 15 or 16K on your Dacor range So maybe that works for you. I have 15K on my Wolf DF and it is OK but it is on all burners except one. Many people complain that a griddle with 15K is underpowered so 10.5K would be even less. They also mention that the griddle is stainless so it will not season like rolled steel on Wolf. Stainless by itself is one of the poorest conductors of heat so would heat unevenly unless it has aluminum or copper sandwiched in. The French top is also only 8.5K BTUs compared to 18K on something like BlueStar. Also check out the oven size. Look at the usable rack size. A lot of space is taken up by the warming drawer. Look at the broiler size. This is the manual. I would read it and it might bring some other questions to mind. http://ilveappliances.com/sites/default/files/documents/ILVE_Manual_2-13.pdf Do you have service for Ilve where you live? Comments (11)We are making the same decision right now -- either sub zero or thermador for a 36" French Door. I'm leaning towards Thermador based on (i) price (cheaper to start, then factor in the free range hood and it beats the sub by a $3k or more); and (ii) some aesthetic aspects, like the integrated look, the LED column style lighting, and that it would match a touch better with a Thermador range (which includes a free dishwasher). Based on name along, and my support of American manufactured products, I wanted the sub, but it's really hard to justify the extra money, particularly when I already have a hard time justifying the extra spend over the price of a Samsung FD which worked just fine for me for 5 years. But I would love to hear if anyone has any other thoughts. When is the Sub Zero 42 inch French Door coming out? I see it in the design guide, so I assume sometime this year....See MoreWill I regret buying a 30 inch gas range instead of a 36 inch?
Comments (59)I wanted to contribute my experience- we got the capital culinarian all gas 48" w/ the griddle (so we have 6 burners) within the past year and I have been using it for a few months. I LOVE LOVE LOVE our decision!! I too did a lot of research and did not read many negative reviews about it- and they are very well built, pretty, and simple design-wise (my husband is a contractor and thought they were most similar to the commercial ranges he has worked on, i.e. if something breaks it would be easy to fix). I probably wouldn't need 6 burners just for cooking- but it is nice to have. I also do a lot of canning/preserving, and do use 6 burners at the same time (simmer for warming lids, canning pot, pot for extra hot water, pot w/ stuff to be canned, pot w/ syrup for the stuff to be canned, one pot w/ dinner cooking). My husband loves the griddle- very easy to make breakfasts, hot sandwiches, etc. You could always do 4 burners and a grill/griddle as an option if you don't can/need 6 burners. Also, I really enjoy the big oven on the 48" (not sure how this compares in size to the 36" since the 48" has a large and small oven and the 36" one large oven). It can fit 9x13" pans side by side, and cookie sheets. The roll out racks aren't as smooth as some of the other brands we looked at (we liked the thermador racks the best- very smooth) but they work pretty well. Also, I haven't had any problems w/ the baking heat/evenness, and our oven is gas (which I think is typically worse than electric ovens?). I haven't baked bread yet- but have done a lot of other foods (cookies, casseroles, etc.). So if it were me I would definitely do the 36" over the 30" :-) It sounds like you would use it w/ all the cooking that you do. If you have any questions about mine please let me know :-)...See MoreThe Kitchenworks
