That's a pretty room with all that natural light! Try the bunkbed on the wall across from the window so the play area is more open in front of the window and so you can decorate that window wall as the first thing you see as you come in. My boys (13, 16) just switched rooms and getting the bed away from the window made a huge difference in one of the rooms with an orientation similar to yours.

How monkey-like are your boys? We just had fun with a small rock climbing wall area. I also like having stuff on casters to rearrange for different activities. Would an IKEA Kallax or similar cubby organizer fit under the window?

Hello! I would advise a nice light grey paint tone and let their toys and posters bring in the color. A storage unit that they can both utilize would look nice.

I disagree. Light will come in that window and wake the boys. Leave the bunk beds where they are.

I've always like primary colors for boy's rooms - red/white/blue. They age well with the boys as the art can be changed.

Duvets instead of a top sheet will work for the boys in the winter and make changing sheets so much easier. I like the idea of a storage unit under the windows - toys/books etc. A chest can go on the wall facing the window.

We have a bonus room where we keep all of the kid's toys. The boys like sports. My oldest is really into football, basketball and soccer. He likes collecting sports posters and jerseys and every kind of ball. He really likes reading comic books and graphic novels. My youngest is into stuffed animals and legos. I just don't know how to organize all their stuff to keep it neat and tidy.

You could frame and hang the jerseys (assuming he doesn't wear them; if he does, you could mount hooks on the wall and hang the jerseys on hangers when they're not on his back), get some furniture that has a locker room look (think those huge green metal desks in every pe teacher's office!), add a rug with colourful blocks, paint three walls plus the ceiling a light grey and the window wall a darker blue-grey. You could probably make the closet doors look like lockers in an afternoon with paint. Solid grey bedding and white sheets. If you were willing, the bunk could be painted to match the walls so it blends in. I did that with my boys' room and it really makes it look more spacious.

Grey is only as boring as you let it be! With lots of other bright colours and happy collections the grey would be just a calm backdrop, much like the beige in cheryldavis1818's cute photos.

And like any other neutral, it will "grow up" with them as their tastes change in the coming years.

I wish I had a picture of my son's room back in the day--or maybe I don't. We sponge painted it RED and BLUE. All four walls. It was quite the WOW factor. The white curtains in a boys room are what looked incongruent to me. Color is a personal choice that I would let them make then find FUN duvet's or quilts to bring it home. I have to agree on the STUFF factor. In my world, there was no room for DECOR for decore's sake. My kids FILLED their rooms with favorite things from books to musical instruments to toys.

The first thing I would add is a huge cork board for each boy to save th walls from becoming pin cushions.with posters memorbilia etc. We always did that with our boys.I would see what colors they like hopefully they ca agree on one and then paint that color on one wall and the rest a nice neutral that works with that color.Add bedding to reflect their interests . I think some shelves are a good idea for a few things to be displayed for sure.The lamp and the drapes are way too formal for a boys room. Maybe some woven shades for the window and wall lights for each bunk. I would not bother with a desk unless one of them actually will use it. In my experience kids sit on their beds with a laptop to do homework. Maybe a table in the play space for craft stuff if they are into building planes etc Maybe afold out bed/ chair where the dresser is for sleepovers .

Have you asked them what colors they might like? As you're redoing the room, do they need their own separate areas at all? I'd talk to them to see what they each might like...maybe one would like a bean bag chair, another a low coffee table to play on while sitting on the floor. I'd also move the bunk beds only because, we live where it gets cold and the cold outside wall by my head would bother me. Window treatments can keep a room dark if necessary. But I think playfulness would be part of the decor...

Will they actually work at a desk? I had one growing up, but invariably did my homework at the kitchen table -- now a lot of it is on computers. I think I'd use the open wall space for a bookcase and a couple of bean bag chairs or piles of cushions, which would make it a place that they could read, lounge, or play, as desired.

Since the bonus room is handling their stuff, consider separating the bunks into twins, unless they object. Put the headboards on that same wall, and wall mount lights over the beds so the reader can enjoy a book there while his brother plays with his stuffed toys. Let them pick out matched, but non-themed bedding and pull the wall color from that. If you stick with white bedding and drapes, then you open the walls for any color they and you can agree on. Separating the beds and placing them perpendicular to that wall will enhance your ability to make them up.

The point about the desk is a good one. So far I have two deskers and two non-deskers. My eldest daughter (14) could not function without her desk.

By ten you probably have a good idea whether he will use and appreciate a desk. Does he ask for one? Does he organize his drawers and boxes nicely? Does he always do his homework at one spot (voluntarily) even if that spot isn't a desk? If the answers to these questions are "yes!" you probably have a desker there! :-D If the answers are "no" or "huh, I don't really know..." maybe he isn't the kind of person who needs a desk. If that changes, it's easy enough to add or subtract one later.
