Do I hire painter to spray paint cabs w/lacquer or DIY w/paint?
Comments (1)This is one of those things again where you could get several bids for the job and end up with several different opinions on which way is best. Every painter has their own way. Spraying the boxes on site is very common, though I would consider just brushing them if they are oak. Because oak has such deep grain, it is very easy to achieve a sprayed like finish even with a brush....the grain makes the brush marks pretty hard to see. Of course, you cannot brush lacquer though. The lacqeur smell will linger for 2-3 weeks, depending on how much ventilation you have. Some guys have gadgets they set in windows to blow all the fumes outside. IMO it's not worth it. I don't think you are gaining durability and most lacquers will yellow over time. If somebody is saying lacquer will give them a factory finish but latex will not, then I would guess they haven't sprayed much latex. This makes sense because some guys are just lacquer guys and don't really think that any of the modern day waterbornes/acrylics are as good, so they never learned how to use them....See MoreSpray Deck over concrete - Does anyone have it?
Comments (11)I work for a builder so I have seen it many many times. I am with you about the texture, it looks too much like a wall for my taste. However, most of our customers that have it done have it stamped and stained with two different colors. The stamped spray deck we typically do looks more like rock. As far as chipping goes, we don't really have an issure with it except for springtime hail. Customers will call us over the tiniest imperfections about decks, but they paid good money for it so it's expected to last. I've noticed hail that is baseball size or larger will chip it. Comments (3)Use gesso in multiple coats to bring the chip up level with the rest. Use acrylic artist's colors to match the variegated blue effect. Coat over the repair part with clear lacquer (could be nail polish, LOL) then blend into the existing with a typical rubbing-out regime of 2000 grit sandpaper, more clear, more sanding, finally a polishing compound and wax. A lot of asian lacquer of more recent vintage "cheats" and uses gesso. That blue may be the tint they added to their gesso underlayers. Casey...See MoreCabinet Paint - Acrylic vs Oil vs Lacquer
Comments (4)We had ours done a year ago. I had them brushed with oil base BM as I wanted the historic look of the brush in the paint. It is very subtle. I love the way they came out and they have held up great so far, I just wipe them with a dishcloth and soapy water. Hope this helps, caroline...See Morepetlover
