Comments (2)I attached a mature shield to the front of a large half basket using a large piece of plastic mesh from a grapefruit or onion bag and a bit of panty hose. I used twist'ems and string to secure the net cradle to the basket. It looked pretty awful but a new shield frond grew over the mesh and I was able to remove the ties and string as soon as the roots grew through to the moss beneath. It is hot and humid here and I would hate to actually pierce anything I didn't have to....See MoreStaghorn Fern Best Practice ?
Comments (11)Hello all. I fell in love with Staghorn ferns when I seen them in the greenhouse at my collage. There was about 4 of them and my professor would not sell me one for nothing in the world cause they were hard to come by in my town. Now 2yrs later, Lowe's started carrying them. So I got a few, 2 small ones and one medium size. The larger of the 3 is clearly marked Platycerium Bifurcatum, the other ones just have a tag that says Staghorn fern platycerium. Now The fertile fronds on these look nothing like the bigger one I have so I was wondering are they of the same species. I have 2 videos on YouTube, just search for threatt1000 and they will pop up. Also, how old do you think my larger one is and when can I start looking for fertile fronds spores to collect. Another thing is I have old banana peels on the bottom along with ironite plus granular fertilizer. My plans are in moss and watered only when dried with distilled water. Since winter is coming I have them inside and I mist them often to keep humidity between 50-80%....See MoreHow Do I Remove Staghorn Fern Clippings
Comments (1)Hi Since nobody else jumped in here's my two cents lol. I've only dome it a couple of times and only one was successful.. The frond that stays flat the "shield" will develop separate roots and this is a good time top remove them?? I find that unless it's a rare variety (any kind other than (Bifurcatum)it's not worth the effort as you can get well established ones for a couple of bucks at any of the box stores. Okay you're saying my advice is not worth the two cents??? lol gary...See Morebrdrl
