Does Sedum hernandezii branch naturally?

A few days ago I purchased a 2" sedum hernandezii. I had never heard of it before and when I got home I looked up images of the mature plant to see what it would look like. I found pictures of it planted as a faux bonsai.

I'd like to do this, but, haven't been able to find any information on whether or not the plant branches naturally (looks like there are two single stems in the pot I have). I don't know if I need to pinch the top to get it to branch or if it will branch naturally if I just let it grow.

Yes it does:). I've had mine for around 6-8 years. Bought it as a little guy and it's this big now.

This pic was taken in the summer so he's a little bigger now, not much tho;).

I've found it to be very slowww growing. Also doesn't help the leaves fall off if you brush up against it too hard. Even the little leaves that fall take extremely long for little leaves to pop out. I'm trying to remember what it looked like when I first bought it. I believe it was just two small pieces. Probably 3-4 inches tall.

I really do like this specific Sedum. Would be really easy to do the whole Bonsai look with.

Your Hernandezii is beautiful, very impressive and the succulent arrangement is gorgeous!!

I'll just let him do his thing, then.

Usually I'm not a huge fan of the "jellybean" succulents because the leaves fall off if you look at them wrong...even though one of my stems has lost a few leaves (one that is still in the pot, so, hopefully will produce a new plant) the leaves on this plant seem to be more firmly attached than most other "jellybeans"

You have 2 different fertilizers - one is slow release (not 'controlled' release - they're different) the other is water soluble, so in view of that fact, it's probably not a good idea to mix them. Also, 3:1:2 ratio fertilizers are formulated to provide nutrients in the ratio that the average plant actually takes up the nutrients. That means that ALL nutrients are represented as a function of N. IOW - you need a specific amount of each nutrient to compliment each unit of N the plant uses. In this case, if you mix equal volumes of 24-8-16 with the 12-4-8, and could figure out how to apply them properly, the combined mixture would still only have 2/3 as much of the secondary macros and all micros as the plant would need. If you want to use the slow release rose formula for containers, let me know how much you have and how much each bag weighs. I'll figure out how much Micromax is needed to "fill in the missing blanks' and send it to you - assuming you live in the US or a US Territory. Al

plants don't go from a shipping package to cold soil, ===>>> ya kinda left out.. that they just came in the mail ... for the future... mail orders should be rec'd by 9/1 ... to have time to properly harden off ... and with an order that late.. i would do it from a northern nursery .... rather than a warmer zone ... if i rec'd something today .... it would go in the garage for a week ... then the north side of the house for a week .. then into the ground .... i would also talk with the seller.. to determine where they came from... e.g. hothouse.. or are they already hardened off to some extent ... if so.. i would skip the garage .... heave will be a giant issue.. so after planting.. and after ground freeze i would cover them with fully mulched leaves.. or straw .. the key is to get them dormant.. and keep them dormant... and the covering will help the soil remain frozen .... in case of that weird mid-winter heat wave ... i would not worry about permanent placement .. grouping them all together for protection.. and then move them as soon as the ground thaws .... ken

It is amazing what those city folk can do, Karen, as you well know - apparently it's quite common to have a C&S Show along with a demonstration of alpaca shearing. Just kidding!!!! The plant was from the show that I attended in The City, the alpacas, llamas and a cat were at a couple's off-the-grid quarter-section (160 acres!) we visited in Mountain Man and Woman country about 80 km north of Kamloops. Yes, you guessed it, that's a self-tanned moose hide vest and behind him is the root cellar, something I had always wanted to go into but never had had the opportunity before. No, llamas are much larger. They wanted nothing to do with me, but if I had young dandelions or alfalfa shoots in my hand the alpacas would get close enough to socialize with. The newly-shorn ones had the feel of a plush, spongy rug. I think it's llamas, alpacas and vicunas, but, like Euphorbias, I know almost nothing of South American quadrupeds. I thought there was something called a guanato, but maybe that's a relative to a capybara, the giant rat. And to end this on a succulent note and as an apology for hijacking Wool Lady's thread, I promise to keep an eye on the state of this in-the-ground Agave patonii v. minima f. variegata (its name is under dispute). I'll have to remove it in the fall but now it should grow well.

Yeah I think you're right about the white; looked again today and it was gone. The scale on the last plant if there is subtle, but how about the numerous non-subtle brown spots, some of which look eaten into the leaf? Some kind of mite? If so, here's the combo I've come up with: Acephate - Amazon: "97UP 1lb bag Generic Orthene Insect & Fire Ant Killer" - http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/insect/05507.html says "Insecticide with some effectiveness against spider mites. Systemic." Forbid 4F - eBay: "Free Forbid 4F Miticide Spiromesifen 1/4 OZ free gift when u purchase 3 pipettes" - "Like Avid, it is translaminar. The active ingredient, spiromesifin, while not systemic (i.e., it does not move through the plant’s vascular system like, for example, Merit does), is absorbed by the plant’s leaves and will move from the tops of the leaves to the bottoms where the mites feed." A lot of the more mainstream systemic products use Imidacloprid, and while they don't claim to work against mites, they also don't mention that one reason that spider mites become a problem is insecticides [such as Imidacloprid] that kill their natural predators.

If I remember correctly some of the leaf nodes were leaves have fallen off for whatever reason is where new branching may form. I remember seeing a cluster of little leaves coming out of one or two. It's funny I just don't really pay attention, but I do know I like my little guy;). The flowers are clusters of little yellow flowers:).
