Island Configuration Puzzle
Comments (11)patti_bee, I've given a lot of thought to that aisle. It has been one of my nagging concerns. Since the space it is framed, I can actually walk through that area. I may take out a big box this weekend to simulate the island. I know that that side is tight, but I also don't anticipate much traffic there. I've tried to center all the activities that would require other people in "my" kitchen to be towards the nook side of the island. The wine cooler and refrigerator are there. When I cook, I usually pull out all the ingredients I need before I get going, so I will probably spend a few minutes with the pantry doors open pulling ingredients and laying them on the large, single level island, which will be our prep zone. We've made a generous aisle behind the island in the classic cooking triangle. So... I completely agree it would be better to have that aisle wider, but really don't want to lose length from the island or push it any further into the nook. I really appreciate your comment though and I do plan on going out, mocking up the island and walking through the space again to make certain I don't want to make any modifications. Thanks! Jaymie...See MoreIsland Configuration
Comments (4)Here you go: You have to use HTML on this forum. Do you really need 27" of counter overhang on the end? That could be usable space! A trash pullout! Vertical pan storage! More drawers! Maybe you have space out the wazoo in your kitchen and are a family of really really tall, long legged people. If that's what works for you, that's what's most important. I'd want to squeeze every inch of potential storage space out of that island....See Moreisland countertop configuration

Comments (16)Is symmetry very important to you, even at the expense of functionality? I'm asking b/c I see cabinets that could be better designed functionally. For example, on the sink run to the right of the sink: 2-bin trash pullouts only need to be 18" wide, yet yours is 24" wide. A waste of 6" that could be better used if it was merged with the 18" wide (really, 18" narrow) drawers next to it. But, it looks like you're trying to keep everything exactly the same on both sides of the sink, regardless of functionality. If you were short on space, 18" drawers would be a compromise. However, you are not short on space -- so I have to say that 18" doesn't give you much interior drawer space. Instead, put in an 18" trash pullout and then a 24" drawer base and then the 27" cabinet as a drawer base instead of doors/ROTS (roll out tray shelves). I would examine all the cabinets in your design with functionality in mind -- assuming you aren't someone who absolutely must have symmetry. (Yes, some people are like that. It's not good or bad -- it's just the way they are. We're all different and different things are important to each of us.) If you're worried about "how will it look?"... First, it will look fine! Second, with an island no one is going to even see those cabinets unless they're right in front of them and then it's a "closeup" view and cabinet sizes won't really matter since you won't be seeing them all in one look....See Moremark_rachel
