security camera for outside the home
Comments (6)While I don't know the specs, brand, or quality of the equipment, and whether it includes any type of installation, it sounds like an entry level system. It will provide you with a sense of security by allowing you look at the area, and see all is well, but it's highly unlikely it's going to produce any sort of usable image/photo to identify anyone. The crime shows on television are make-believe when they enhance and blowup the picture and you can then see every detail. Equipment used in casinos - well that's a different story - especially when there is somebody watching and controlling the cameras 24/7. The DVRs now typically have a built-in Web-server so that you can view them remotely from a PC, I-device, or Droid. Quality can very greatly in the basic systems but some do now produce some very good night-time images. Although the software setup can be very challenging on some. To answer your first question, Google "internet security camera" and you'll see several stand-alone cameras, with Web-servers, that can also be viewed remotely, and like the other systems have an alarm zone area for detection, and will send you an email. Although they need to be rated for outdoor use and I still haven't seen any yet that produce any type of usable picture at night. Maybe if the criminals stealing your plants aren't too bright, you could plant some poison oak, too!...See MoreDo you use your phone as a camera?
Comments (14)This is very timely for me. My son has been after me for a couple of yrs to get a smartphone, a decent phone plan and ditch my house phone. I'm about to do that in about 10 days, when my current landline bill will be due. I'm paid up til the 16th. I do have a cell phone, but it's a pay as you go Virgin Mobile flip phone, no camera, and I had to disable the voicemail because I was getting solicitation calls and other calls from people I didn't know. Whether I opened the message or not I had to pay for it. Now, when I miss a call from someone I know, it shows up in the missed calls, So I know to call back. I bought an LG smartphone, with front and rear facing cameras, expandable memory, capability for lots of apps. I'll have caller ID, and Call waiting among other bells and whistles which I'll have to learn. The plan I'm getting will be unlimited talk and text, and Unlimited data at 4G for the 1st 250 mb, after that the speed slows down, but it's still unlimited. My brother has the same plan for $38/month, he loves it. I think it'll work for me too a...See MoreConstruction Camera / House Security
Comments (1)I don't think this forum is going to be the people in the know about this question. It would probably be better to ask someone in the field of security and surveillance. I know there are some pretty sophisticated systems and the field is advancing all the time so there is probably something that can do what you want. I don't think it will be a trail camera though....See Morewhat computer security do you use
Comments (29)Haha, my Apple loving friends? I didn't say that. I would say that Apple's market share is probably higher with more affluent families, perhaps lower with less. Maybe slightly higher here than elsewhere because Apple is here. But among all the tech industry-involved people I know, engineers and others, I'm aware of only one guy (who writes firmware for NICs and routers) who uses Linux at home. His family revolted and he had to give up and get them a Windows PC. No one else. My location and the people I know are probably more likely than others to lead one to expect Linux home use. But it's really nowhere to be found. You and anyone else should figit with it if it interests you. Doing so tends to attract fix-it and engineer types looking for something to play with. But in this discussion you're extending your own preferences and actions to a wider population, that's invalid reasoning....See MoreHome Reborn
