Comments (9)Not in your climate zone so things might be different. BLACK GARNET is a stunning, stunning rose. It has that full thick form thats so unusual in a TH. Color is a deep black red similiar to Black Magic. It just doesn't bloom that much in my garden but I would never get rid of it. Black Magic would be the perfect HT if it had fragrance. Deep rich black red blooms that last quite well in my garden. My favorite HT. (because it blooms much more than Black Garnet). Black Cherry. I just can't say enough good things about Black Cherry. I have four of them. Deep rich red roses with lovely form. Blooms a lot. One of my favorite top five roses, my second favorite floribunda. Great glossy green leaves that always look fabulous. Black Baccara. Another rich deep black red rose. Maybe not to different looking from Black Magic although Black Magic does better for me (more longer lasting blooms). I will add LAVAGLUT which is the deepest red black rose in my garden. My favorite rose and therefore favorite florobunda (I have about 200). The spring flush on this rose is traffic stopping and the blooms last forever. Seriously, they last about two weeks. Never get icked up by too much rain like normal roses. Alas, no scent....See MoreLong List - Pick Your 5 Favorite Crosses of 2013!
Comments (9)Thanks everyone for the comments so far. It seems crosses involving Twilight Zone or any of the mauves are heavily favored, and I don't blame you! Twilight Zone just came out this year but it is such a gorgeous rose, and definitely an improvement over Ebb Tide. Diane, in my opinion I think you have the right idea with using Ascot in breeding. Cynthia, there is no time like the present, and don't be intimidated by the numbers! When they say worth keeping they mean is having commercial and market value, and most of the fun in rose breeding isn't about money or finding americas next super-rose, it's the anticipation of what you might get. Also every breeder, like roses, is unique and has his or her own personality and I believe that is reflected in the roses each breeder comes up with. For example I bet when I mention the names Radler, Swim, Carruth, David Austin, Moore, Sproul, etc. a certain type of rose comes to mind. I'm not sure I have a defined "style" yet but rest assured I am determined to revolutionize roses in my own way. My dream/goal is is to create thornless fragrant shrub roses, in beautiful colors, high petal count, with the disease resistance of knock outs. Some people say well that's just the perfect rose but l believe there's no such thing and never will be since different people value certain traits more than others. Sure my goal is ambitious, but just watch, eventually I will succeed! :)...See MoreFor those that grow Black Baccara
Comments (10)I just got the rose this year in April and I find it hard to believe that it gets 6 ft tall since it is the same size as when I bought it, about 3.5 ft. It's still in the original 5 gallon pot. It is in full Sun and has been fertilized twice. It gave me a flush in early May that lasted quite a long time but it hasn't bloomed for a month and a half. I think I should have deadheaded the plant earlier but the flowers still looked good old and dry. It handled the Memorial Day snow storm quite well by not dropping the blooms. Compared to black magic, it gives better off better blooms in cooler temperatures but the frequency is much less. Black magic is currently exploding with blooms and Baccara is just sitting there with only one immature bud that may take weeks to open. Bacarra was the better rose early but black magic holds that title now. Just a little disappointed in her as of late but that may have been my fault. Good Luck...See MoreBlack Baccara
Comments (16)I know this is a year old, but I just want to let you know that this thread is one of the reasons I ended up trying Black Baccara and I'm so glad I did! The petals are so nice and thick, it stands up to our heat exceedingly well! And in a vase... oh my just stunning! It lasts so long! I am heat testing mine in a pulp pot near a very hot stone wall with southern exposure and it has been taking it quite well. It probably won't go here, I'm just deciding how much heat it can actually take. Gets some mildew, but that's it. The blooms haven't been crisping. Cut 3 days ago Today... has hardly even aged! This one looks a bit more red. They're just gorgeous. The petals are quite substantial! Mildew, but still pretty impressive for this deadly heat zone test area! I hope to find the right spot in my yard and that mine looks as amazing as yours someday!...See MorenanadollZ7 SWIdaho
