help with 60s kitchen
Comments (31)Those solid wood cabinets you have are almost irreplaceable. I have some like that in a late 1950s vintage rental house, and it isn't even an especially well built one. They've stood up to almost 30 years of tenants, and all I've had to do was replace a few worn out catches. Meanwhile, the fake wood vinyl covered cabinets in another allegedly higher grade rental, built just 20 years later, look much shabbier. I've had interesting times reattaching cabinet doors between tenants. The screws strip right out of the particle board. Lizzierobin, I had a coworker a couple of decades ago who'd been raised in the 1950s and would have loved to have your "before" kitchen! When he and his wife (also a fifties kid) finally settled down, they bought a former rental that still had some of its "mid century" decor like they'd grown up with. The bathroom (only one!) had matching green sink and toilet, and the classic white tile walls with black trim and basketweave black and white tile floor. Unfortunately, their kitchen had been redone with generic big-box-store cabinets and Formica-slab countertops. They already had scrounged up vintage appliances, and one of their next goals was to find salvageable period cabinets and boomerang Formica counters. Now that some of those old Formica patterns have been reissued, maybe they finally have the kitchen of their dreams. :)...See MoreAsking for Input on a '60s Ranch Bathroom Update
Comments (16)Hello, again. Had to shift my attention to other matters for a bit, but my husband did manage to make scale drawings of the space. I have conceded to continue the Karndean French Oak through the bathroom and kitchen (it has been ordered), but I am quite intrigued by Spicher and Co Vintage floorcloths. Anybody have first-hand experience with this product?? Additionally, I had the opportunity to go exploring in a local warehouse to search for vintage tile and found a couple of tiles that I adore! There is a limited supply, but I hope to come up with a design that will incorporate these accent tiles and fill in with some sort of white-ish tile. I have attached a pic taken at the warehouse (long strip is the countertop) as well as a couple in the bathroom with the vanity mirror and other materials we have selected (third pic is for scale). Fwiw, I am not asking whether you do or don't like the blue tiles–they are exactly what I had hoped to find–but I would appreciate input regarding what shape/size of white-ish tile might look best to complement the decorative blues. I am told the installer will likely have some great suggestions, but have yet to speak with him about it. We located 50 of the larger white tile with the blue corners and 60 of the blue flower tile. We still haven't selected tub/shower and sink plumbing fixtures. I have seen a few tub/shower extenders (with exposed pipes) in finishes that would look good at reasonable prices, but am leery of choosing one that will lead to problems down the road. Any suggestions are most appreciated! I think we are slowly making progress....See MorePlease help with paint colors to update look of 60’s ranch
Comments (11)Thx everyone. Considering a blue rather than a gray - even though gray is “in”. Just have to find the right blue. Should be closer to navy I think. Will look at SW Anchors Away as suggested. Still wondering though about a cedar color. Not sure about getting rid of shutters bc windows are so insignificant. Also bushes have already been trimmed back. This pic is before that was done. Still, more landscaping in near future after porch is expanded.not obvious is a small red maple near the porch....See MoreHelp me with a layout for my 60s kitchen!
Comments (10)I love your blue cabinets )) Here's an idea. (consider the cooktop as a range, I forgot to change it.) The island is 142" long including 1,5 "o/h. The depth is 32,5", 24" deep cabs and 6" deep cabs at the back plus 1,5 o/h on the operative side and 1" o/h on the DR side. (IEDIT: 142" can be too long to have a counter without a seam, I don't know what I was thinking!) I'm thinking 36" aisle b/w the island and the DR wall and 44" b/w the perimeter cabs. I'd at least leave 42" aisle in bathroom side. I tried an L and an island but when I placed the fridge on the bath wall and tried to get a good prep space b/w the sink and the range, the distance b/w the range and the fridge widened a lot, so I think a galley worked better in your space....See Moredecoenthusiaste
