shrimp cocktail shrimp plant as hardy, drought tolerant?
Comments (12)Liz, I never even noticed you had not said 'fruit' on the subject line. LOL! Cynthia and all, here on the NW side of San Antonio fruit cocktail shrimp plant is just as hardy and drought tolerant as the red shrimp plant. In a mild winter like last year it didn't freeze all the way back where it was against a wall. The tops that did get nipped and fell over kept the stems green so I just left them in place until spring. Once fruit cocktail is established it comes back very quickly and blooms continually until the first freeze. Well, I take that back. In protected places both the fruit cocktail and the red shrimp flowered all last winter. It gets a little over two feet tall and is very thick and bushy spreading itself around nicely from the roots, and though you will get a few plants coming up from seeds blown around it is not 'invasive.' BTW, I never see anything like a seed pod, but some plants have come up some distance from the original planting so I have to assume it is from seeds. Those volunteer plants don't get much water. They wilt, but I'm amazed they survive and perk back up when I think to water them. It is definitely on my favorite plant list! Incidentally, my 'soil' is shallow black clay over limestome. No bugs bother it and the foliage is healthy and green even when the volunteers come up on pure caliche. Like everything else it gets a few sprinkles of fertilizer now and then....See MoreBig Mommy and Little Mommy
Comments (9)--"When I listen to her, it doesn't sound any different than the run down she would give me on the phone."-- Thurman, if it bothers you so much, why listen in to your wife's phone calls? Do you sit by and listen to every phone call your wife makes/gets to and from her relatives and friends? Hanging on every word with fear/anger that wife might be saying/hearing some 'personal things'? What's 'personal' and what's not and in whose opinion? I'm not sure I'd compare your childhood family to what is 'normal' relationships within families. You've told us yourself that one of your parents was 'unstable and addictive' and that you learned early on to let things 'fester'. You do realize, right, that whatever you overheard that you found too personal for wife to 'share' with SD, son himself very likely would have or has also 'shared' with his sister? How many phone calls between brother and sister do you suppose there are that you know nothing about? You also realize right, that you have an unhealthy tendency to think of your son as a personal possession? Something that is 'yours yours, all yours'. No one else is suppose to love him, care about him or have anything to do with any part of him because afterall, you, thurman, own him. Just like you own your wife...no one else should love and care about her (except for the child you gave her). No personal phone calls showing concern. No bottles of perfume. No greeting and seeing off guest in your home. Nope, it's 'yours, yours, all yours'. For pete's sake, I read one thread where you were upset son asked a ride to a friends house from his sister instead of from you! You were hurt and livid. How dare YOUR son want a ride from anyone other than his FATHER. Does all of this above sound like a normal functioning parent who just happens to have a SD who has caused every bit of your 'troubles' by not KNOWING HER PLACE? Exactly what, thurman, do you think SD's place is in the family? What do you think her relationship should be like with YOUR son? How much and/or how little should she be ALLOWED to love and care and show a genuine interest in/for her brother? Her mother?...See MoreChristmas & Bday arrived today...BIG MIELE NEWS. Like the German story for children : Frau Holle :) I guess it is a preference :) but Germans never wash their down comforters ( they usually cost about 300 dollars and upward , depending on the feather fill ) I just got rid of some my mom used to have about 45 years old !...See MoreLets give it another try
Comments (9)Hi there, Steffen. And welcome to the forum. Growing adeniums up here north can be a challenge but fortunately not impossible. For indoor growing I suggest that you buy a heating mat and an artificial light source (heat is as important as high light intensity and adeniums love bottom heat). For instance, LED or T5HO as suggested. Use the setup - both mat and light - even in the spring and summer, on overcast cold days to prevent your plants from going (semi-)dormant. In my experience, changeable weather (with longer periods of cold overcast weather) during the growing season will dramatically stunt the growth of adeniums. It can take weeks before they wake up again. You want to prevent that. During the fall and winter months, I suggest that you use the artificial light as well. The past year I have been growing adeniums in heated closed grow tents (30C/86F) under 17 hours of LED light. Using this setup, I prefer a growing medium, coir/cocos ground, with 40-50% inorganic materials (it does not really matter what you use - as long as it prevents water logging). The ratio you want to use depends on your growing conditions and watering regime. Without a heated tent, I would probably change the ratio myself and increase the percentage of inorganic materials. Say, to 60/40. Cheers, Martin...See MoreRelated Professionals
