I'd recommend a Miele.

What skmom said: Put in a drip pan and a leak detector. Link the leak detector to a shut-off valve.

DH is deathly afraid of leaks. We wanted to forego the icemaker and water dispenser but found it limited our selection (of mid-range fridges) too much.

Look at Whirlpool or Kitchenaid. I have a 12 year old Maytag French door counter depth similar to the aforementioned brands. They come with an ice maker in the freezer and a water dispenser inside the fridge, We elected to have the ice maker removed prior to installation and replaced with a shelf that holds two plastic ice trays. We never had water hooked up to it as we rarely use ice and know that ice makers are a big cause of problems. We have a far better water filter installed under our sink.

I’ve heard far too many horror stories of these things leaking and causing nightmare damage to flooring. No thanks! We purchase bags of ice for parties and make our own ice cubes which are fresher for the occasional times we need ice.

I laid wood look tile under my fridge wall, and will do so under the sink run as well, when that time comes. In the image below you can see the oven still connected to electrical. The dark brown floor in that zone is tile, whereas the dark brown floor in the foreground is wood, as will be the rest of the run.... eventually.

I came up with this idea after repairing a damaged subfloor in the back corner where my fridge had lived before. The tile should not be detectable when all is done. Boy do I wish I had an image of that. I’ve been stalled for a while....

Definitely get a leak detector, but I would also forego the ice maker and water dispenser (unless you decide the risks are worth it to you). It does decrease the options not to have them, but that was the choice I made and I'm happy (so far - 6 months) with my fridge choice. It actually has an optional ice maker, but I elected not to hook it up.

Most of the better/larger fridges have at least an ice maker factory installed in the freezer compartment, many have the ice/water dispenser in the door of the fridge compartment. To maximize space, choose a fridge that has the ice maker in the freezer, not in the door and just don’t hook it up to water. Go back to the 1950’s and make your own ice the old fashioned way and save yourself some headaches.

I’d love to see a nice counter depth French Door fridge with no water or ice in black. I think there would be a market for such an item given that ice makers are the number one source of problems with a fridge.

We'd be fine without an icemaker. Our current GE fridge has a water/ice dispenser that broke within the first year and we just stopped using it. No big deal to have a couple of ice trays as we don't use much ice anyway. I would like the filtered water, but we could probably just add that to the sink, right?

Problem is that there aren't many cabinet depth fridges that come without a ice/water dispenser. We were looking at an LG or Samsung from Costco and they don't seem to have any.

Now that I know these water sensors exist (we can hook them up to our home alarm system) I feel a little better about it.

Still open to any suggestions of refrigerator brands you've liked, especially reviews of LG or Samsung since that's what we're leaning towards. Consumer Reports gives good reviews, but there are a lot of unhappy customers in reviews for every single fridge I've looked at.

Regardless of where you plan to buy, I've found AJ Madison's website has a great search tool that will help you narrow down options based on your requirements and/or desires (eg counter depth, no water dispenser, non French door - or whatever).

Our new fridge has water and ice, but we didn't get it hooked up (we spent a year doing an insurance restoration and I am not going thru that again!). It's a KA and the water and ice maker were very inconspicuous (ie, we didnt lose a lot of fridge space to them)

SubZero top fridge/bottom freezer with an ice maker. Love it.

Previous and current kitchens had hard wood and fridges with water and ice dispensers. Have not had any issues with leaking.

The issue we did have was when we went away and our house lost power. We returned to water on the floor in front of the fridge from the ice that was in the shoot. HW was warped, but eventually dried out so you couldn’t tell.

Lesson learned. Always remove all ice from ice maker and turn off when going away.

I have wood floors in my kitchen. For the past 6 years I have had a Counter Depth Samsung with ice and water in the door. I have not had any issues with leaking or ice staying in the chute (hope I’m not jinxing myself by posting this).

Prior to the Samsung I had an older GE Profile Side by side that also had ice and water in the door. No problem with that for the 9 years I had it in my pre-remodel kitchen. Never had any issues with that fridge and the laminate floor in my previous house in 10 years time.

I've never had a leak -- but also just never hooked up the icemakers. I don't use much ice and prefer to have the space for food storage. I've had good luck with all my Whirlpool appliances, but don't know if the quality is the same now (decades later). My current LG frig seems to be kind of flimsy in the vegetable door frames -- one is cracked.

We are getting engineered hardwood throughout our house and kitchen. Now I am starting to worry about our choices. Our new fridge has a water dispenser in the door and ice maker in the freezer and I'm excited to have that option. Where would I find one of those drip trays that is mentioned....and is there a water shutoff for when you go on vacation to avoid any problems or should I ask the plumber to install one?

But it isn’t just a fridge that can be plumbed! My new Miele coffee machine and combi/steam oven will also be plumbed.

Most of the fridge leaks are right after installation. Use high quality connectors and metal hose.

I try not to live my life worrying about something that might happen once in your lifetime. If it does, that is why you pay for insurance.

Be careful replacing those water filters in the fridge. I didn't tighten one properly and it leaked. The hardwood floor buckled, but luckily, it returned to almost flat after it dried out.

I just simply didn't run a water line to my fridge. I use ice trays, and buy bagged ice for parties. If you don't use up ice on a regular basis (and I wouldn't), that's one of the times you can start running into trouble. I have food storage in the putative ice collection bay.

There are two great sinks in the kitchen here... I was able to find a good unit without a door dispenser.

Yes, although there aren't a lot of fridges of decent quality (in construction, energy use) that don't have those options, so they can be hard to avoid sometimes. Especially if you want a French door model, for some reason.

If you are going to shut off the water supply to the ice maker when on vacation, etc., make sure you turn off the ice maker power switch. Expensive lesson for me.

The problem with getting recommendations for a reliable, non-leaky fridge is that by the time one knows if their fridge will be good in the long run, it's out of production.

I'd be happy to recommend my fridge but it's kind of old.
