Commercial Carpet in a Home??
Comments (11)I went to my local carpet/flooring store today and this is what I found: Shaw, Rambler, level loop, 100% Permacolor Polypropylene, Solution Dyed. It's a low level loop that can be glued directly to the floor. The price on the sample shows for 20 oz. pile is 10.99 per sq. yd/1.22 per sq. ft. If you want the 26 oz. pile it is 11.99 per sq. yd/1.33 per sf. I can't tell the difference from looking or touch between the 20 and 26 oz., therefore I'm leaning toward the 20 oz. The lady in the store said that I'll be sick of looking at it way before it wears out (talking about the 20 oz.). That sounds good to me! So that's the price info for those interested. It's offered in 26 different colors but most are medium to darker colors but there are a couple of lighter colors that will work for me. I think it looks nice enough to even put in the guest bedroom downstairs...was thinking of putting something 'nicer' since water has never been an issue in that area, but I'm happy to just run this through the entire basement. This particular store I went to had many other lines by Shaw to look at. Many quite nice, with patterns, etc., this is just the one that I liked best. I went to another store but didn't care for what little they carried in the way of commercial/glue down carpet. So those of you interested in commercial glue down carpet you may need to call/visit several stores before finding one that offers much in selection. Boxer does this sound like an appropriate carpet for my needs? I appreciate your help!...See MoreKitchen Cabinets - Paint, Stain or leave alone?
Comments (0)Thank you so much for all of your beautiful examples this site has truly been inspirational to me! I have been lurking for a while, taking in all of the beautiful kitchen improvements that have been created. I could really use some help from those who have been there! To make a long story short, we made some changes to this kitchen when I moved into it 5 years ago. It was so bad that I just wanted CHANGE, but did not have a budget to change everything and was in such a hurry to change it that I didnt really think a lot about any of before doing it! Here is what we completed in the first year We removed the pink and blue wallpaper and painted the walls, removed the kitchen carpet (gross!) and replaced with laminate floor, replaced the almond colored appliances with black and stainless, replaced hardware on the cabinets, replaced the rectangular fluorescent light fixture over the island and added a few recessed lights, replaced the blue and pink speckled, wood trimmed countertops with laminate "faux granite" ones and tore out 3 plate glass windows to make a sliding door and built a deck outside of that. We later added a backsplash and just last month, we replaced the island with a longer custom island that has roll-out shelves and functional drawers. We put a granite countertop on the island. We are very happy with how the island turned out. Here is where I need some help. I am ready to make changes to the cabinets but again we are on a small budget and dont want to spend thousands to make just a cosmetic change on this house that we plan to be in for only about 5 more years. My first thoughts are to paint the cabinets a lighter color and just leave the countertops as they are. This would still give a contrast to the island countertop and would contrast the cabinets with the darker island. Since the cabinets are oak, I know this is going to take an intense method of sanding, priming, sanding, priming, sanding, painting and painting again. We are willing to do this but have also thought about having some MDF doors made and just painting those. This would eliminate some of the sanding and would also allow us to have the doors made with full overlay so that we could remove the center stile on some of the cabinets. I have attached photo of our kitchen before the island was added. Trying to figure out how to add a second photo with the new island! Hoping I can get some suggestions for painting the existing doors versus custom MDF doors and also suggestions for wall colors. The kitchen opens up into a great room, so we would probably extend the wall color all the way into that room. The end of the kitchen where the counters and cabinets are does not get a lot of natural light, so were hoping whatever we do will help make it all look a little lighter. We are not completely opposed to also replacing those counter tops with something solid but we dont want to replace the backsplash, so we need something that will work with that. Can you help?? Comments (77)Boy bry, you can sure find a reason to argue with any statement made by anybody about anything. I don't care if they do it, I try to get to the core of why they are doing it. Maybe that's not my business, but on the other hand, unlike you apparently, for many people these sorts of projects are not discretionary income, and they are not necessarily doing it for the joy of doing it, which is a great reason for doing anything, but because of a pressure to conform to something, which is often external. Some people have no idea what they actually like, they are responding to what they are told they should like at any given time. There was a thread recently posted by someone who built a completely custom house a few years ago. Fast forward a few years, and because of various factors that were present even at that time, they now have nothing but the house. No other assets, no retirement, nothing. And they can't even afford to live in the house and have to rent it out and live in a small apartment. This is not the result of some cataclysmic event that took place after the fact. These were things that were happening before, during and after the building process. Again, this is not my business, strictly, except that the entire thing has been played out on these forums and if people did not want opinions on what they are doing, they would not be posting and asking for opinions on it, they would just be doing it. Most people are not in the situation that you are in, able to retire prematurely and take on large projects with discretionary income. As for me, no one in here really knows my financial status, it's not really anyone's business. And I could say that I'm independently wealthy when I could be someone on disability in a rent-controlled subsidized studio apartment who just has a reasonably large vocabulary and a rich fantasy life. In any case of course an opinion is going to be overlaid with someone's experience and belief system and that is going to be projected onto other people....See MoreDifferent carpet on stairs vs rooms
Comments (6)You don't need a high pile anything on lower level or bedrooms. Pick ONE neutral carpet for both floors, and then something bolder/different for your stair. If at all Possible? Even better is the LVP everywhere, use AREA RUGS..........and just runner or carpet the stair. Higher piles have nothing to to with comfort or warmth, really. Climbing out of bed onto an area rug is just as comfortable as any edge to edge broadloom. Your will have more unity in the house, a larger feel, and for kids? An opportunity to use inexpensive area rugs as they grow, and decor changes over the years. it's also a better long term solution. Bedrroom and closet carpet gets dirtier faster than anywhere else in your home. Why? It is where you spend more barefoot time, change clothes.......dust is largely human skin. Bare feet are the enemy of broadloom. LEAVING FOOT OILS BEHIND, THE MAGNET FOR DUST AND A GUARANTEED GRUNGE TRAFFIC PATTERN. : )...See MoreRelated Professionals
