Need help with counter-top and backsplash selection
Comments (1)I think white would be a nice contrast. I've attached a link to a GW member's (kellienoelle) kitchen that used Delicatus granite & a classic white backsplash. Comments (3)If you have trouble visualizing what you'd like but "know it when you see it", then at this stage you should probably just look at as many stainless / dark cherry kitchens as you can and see which countertops and flooring "grab" you. In my case I knew I wanted simple, natural cherry cabinets and stainless appliances and probably a wood floor, but that was it. Looking at lots of pictures helped me narrow things down, so now I can at least have intelligent conversations with kitchen designers. I'd suggest going over to houzz.com and entering "stainless steel dark cherry kitchen" into their search box and looking through some of the hundreds of results you get. It's a great source of ideas. After you see some you like, you can probably come up with more words to add to the search box to narrow things down. You can also go to google and enter "site:gardenweb.com dark cherry stainless" and you'll find lots of threads on this site too. I don't know of a way to limit it to threads with photos, unfortunately. Laura...See MoreQuick help with matching colors and "busy-ness" of counters/backsplash
Comments (11)I recently refreshed my oak kitchen with new countertops, backsplash and farm sink. https://www.houzz.com/photos/my-pics-work-in-progress-phvw-vp~93784356 There are more pics in my "my pics" idea book, and I also have a "wood kitchens" idea book which also has some refreshed older kitchens. This Houzz post contains a wood kitchen that did a white or cream arabesque with a contrasting grout - it looks better than I would have thought. In general, I find a simple backsplash works best with wood, but this works: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/im-painting-my-golden-oak-island-should-i-go-robin-egg-blue-dsvw-vd~4690219 Warm wood tones and cool grays do not play well together - neither does anything for the other. The grays were formulated with the white are very dark wood cabinets in mind. Cream, creamy beige, blue or green look best with warm wood. The blues and greens can have gray undertones. Small amounts of gray are OK. Here is a pretty kitchen with black countertop and simple cream backsplash: If you have not already replaced the microwave, consider a stainless hood as you have a large kitchen with lots of counter space or other places for a microwave....See Moreideas regarding color matching cabinets + backsplash with countertop
Comments (13)If the appliances stay-I'd reconsider painting the cabinets..appliances will look very out of place or so I think. Too heavy next to white(that should be cream or ivory of course, at minimum, with all the other warm surfaces around..or it can be other color, something in warm realm, but one should love it...all this spray painting stuff is very expensive to do right. Or a huge effort to do right.) In short I'm not sure that painting is the best way to go if almost all the finishes stay as they are. There's a reason this kitchen looks maybe dark to you, maybe older-but it makes sense nevertheless. I agree with all the previous posters who suggested plain backsplash(maybe with some interest like subtle variation that one can get with handmade tile, or crackle..but also just the right color, that goes with rest of the finishes (check Daltile..their color selection is pretty good) will brighten the kitchen and make you happier. The tile itself will have somewhat reflective quality too. Meaning: more light. Love the suggestion of couple glass doors..that can be fun. I'd put (maybe) a rug of my liking...accessories/kitchenalia(is there a word like that? lol) that I like to look at while using them..they can be light/bright..they can be shiny..different textures-something polished, something organic, something fabric..all this brightens and softens kitchens, unless you have a very minimalistic style and prefer to have nothing on the counters. But this kitchen doesn't lend itself very well to having absolutely nothing. I'd put a plant there for sure:) It's a nice kitchen. I think small changes, not big overhauls that can open can of worms indeed unless very well thought out, and one's ready to pay for them a lot, will make the biggest difference for now. Do you have good undercabinet lighting? That's an important thing to have. Enjoy your new place! PS I like wooden trims on windows:) To me it's like yay, exciting! Probably because I don't remember seeing it where I lived before, until I moved here....See MoreT Bono
