Taxodium from seed
Comments (11)Thanks Patrick about the ethyl alcohol. I had heard about it but I never could remember how long to soak them in it. In the past, I tried various ways to see what suits me the best. I have rootmaker starter tray so it's not like I can just plant seeds there and wait for them to germinate as it can take up a lot of space. I prefer to lay seeds on the wet paper towel inside plastic sandwich container with the lid on after several months in the fridge. At room temperature after a couple weeks, the seeds will pop out tap root. I would carefully place them into a hole in the media and keep the media moist. I got pretty good % out of it when it comes to filling in all the cells in the rootmaker trays. It's pretty crazy how long the tap roots can grow if left in the container too long. Just 1/4 of an inch is all you need to plant them....See MoreHow really hardy is Taxodium distichum?
Comments (7)There are a couple of 40+ year old Baldcypress growing in Brooklyn Center, MN. The story goes that the seedlings were brought back from a trip to Florida in the mid 60's and planted. Both of these trees cone and produce viable seed. I have several seedlings grown from this seed source. These Taxodium have gone through some really, really brutal winters. Our recent winters have been pretty wimpy, but the winters these trees when through just after planting were quite severe, enduring weeks of below zero weather and temps lower than -30°F. tl³...See MoreTaxodium distichum / Taxodium ascendens Propagation
Comments (11)We have now rooted thousands of cuttings here at SFA State University. Basically, the younger the clone, the easier it is to root. If it's an old tree, it's very difficult. However, you can cut a major branch low down on an old tree (do this in the winter) and then the new growth from that stub should be quite vigorous - and perhaps a bit juvenile. You can then take four to five inch cuttings of that wood in May and June, we use 10,000 PPM K-IBA as a five second dip, and place the cuttings in deep cavity trays. Under intermittent mist, we usually see roots in 12 weeks. Once rooting is up and going, move flats to a shady spot and water frequently until the acclimate. dc...See MoreMetasequoia vs. Taxodium
Comments (4)Metasequoia GENERALLY seems to break dormancy earlier and go dormant later than Taxodium D. here. Helps lead to faster growth at the risk of frost damage. FWIW my metasequia has hints of fall now a zone colder than you though. Do you have both in your yard? I have metasequoia and metasequoia ogon and there are plenty of taxodium in the local parks....See Moreindianagardengirl
