Advice on bar stools?
Hello,
Looking for advice on what color barstools to get for the island - we definitely want something with a cushioned seat. Floor is jacobean stain, cabinets are BM Linen White, walls are BM Silver Sage. Debating between white to match the cabinets? Brown to match the floors? Fabric or leather? We are replacing the pendant lights with oil rubbed bronze ones. Would love any suggestions of what would look good!

Comments (6)You need at least five feet of clear floor space between a table and a seating counter just for the chairs and stools. This assumes that people won't be sitting on both at once, and that there's no walking passage, though there's enough room for people to sidle by. Six feet is a comfortable distance. Eight feet leaves room for people to walk easily. You can shave a little off these measures--a very little--if all the chairs and stools have round, pedestal bases rather than legs. Also, if the stools are the narrow, saddle shaped variety, if they have a similarly narrow leg-base. Best way to convince her is to bring in a stool, or even a chair if she can visualize at all, have the kids all loll around comfortably in the chairs, and ask her to put the stool where people can get by. There are convertible stools, where you can change them from chair height to counter height, which might work in the space as is, but not if an overhang is being added where it isn't already, rather than the cabinet being reduced. Granite-girl offers an interesting alternative way to use the space, which might work if what your sister really wants is a bar to serve the children breakfast at. Comments (11)CNCGuy: Hopefully I'm posting this photo correctly (it's been awhile since I've posted one!) Instead of having a permanent bar inside our pool house, we just move our high patio table & bar stools into the pool house when we want to sit inside. We've got a TV in the corner armoir, ceiling fan/light, and fridge, so we've got all the creature comforts when we need them. Now that the weather is nicer, we moved the patio set and put in our two chaise lounge chairs into the pool house. That's our new Australian Cattle Dog, Nash, hanging outside the pool house w/one of our German Shorthaired Pointers, Lilly. I'll post more photos of him in another thread. Comments (6)I hate to say it, but those two stools don't play nicely together. These look more like you bought some stools, and then you bought some more in a similar color. Like you couldn't find the first ones again, so you settled. A little more contrast between the two would be better. With some element that is repeated in both stools, but not necessarily in the same way. Edited to add: Here is an example of what I mean (just two pictures I found on Wayfair, not suggesting them for anything): Stool 1 Stool 2 See how the stools are the same color, even though they are different shapes. The color would tie them together. Here are two more: Stool 3 Stool 4 See how the wood and white (assuming that's a white and not a cream!) are flipped? The chair version would really go well with Stool 3 -- not so sure about the stool version of this one..... Anyway, these are just for illustration any.......See Moreartistsharonva

Just an idea... if you find bar stools you like but they do not have cushioned seats, we make custom-shaped seat cushions with ties (our Cushion Builder can be found at http://patiolane.com/cushion-builder). You could match your cushions to a valance as well to add softness and color. What other colors are you incorporating? A simple stripe or check might look nice. 6 years agoIs there an actual overhang on this countertop? Doesn't look as though there is one from this view. Also you are not looking for barstools, but counter stools. There is a difference in height. Finally, you may want to coordinate the style of the counter stool with those of your chairs so they visually don't fight one another. 6 years agoI would do a dark brown frame with a light colored seat, preferably something with a hint of white to pull out the white in the cabinets. The "Sarteano Newsprint" would look gorgeous. It has the white with a sage and tan stripe:
In terms of the style of chairs that would look good in your kitchen, I think the Bambusa, Penelope or Raphael 1 stools by Trica will bring in character and development to your cottage looking kitchen.
Plus, they're made out of solid steel, which is a much sturdier build than wood. It'll also help bring some contrast to the wood cabinets and the wood base on the island.
