Need help with living room in open concept bungalow

We have just moved into a new, open concept bungalow with 9 ft ceilings, and I am struggling with a few different things. We would like to put the TV on the wall (we will hide the wires inside the wall), but we will be able to see the brackets as y
ou can see from the front door all the way down to the end of the living room. We thought about doing a stone wall with an electric fireplace and placing the TV above it, but we have been re-thinking that as we keep seeing it at McDonald's and other commercial places. Can someone help with some ideas? We would be open to built-ins... We have ordered a new couch (light grey) and 2 new chairs (grey and ivory) so we will need living room area rug and drapes. I would also like an area rug in my dining room and a runner in the hall, so trying to tie 3 different areas together. Thanks so much for any help!

Congratulations! It looks like a beautiful home. I love the TV right where you have it. Although I love stone fireplaces, I would not do one with an electric fireplace in it. I would wait until I could afford gas. It sounds like you're off to a good start with the furniture. Once your furniture arrives, you can decide on an accent color that you can put in a rug, throws, pillows, ect. I would just take my time and do one thing at a time and it will all come together cohesively. I purchased a rug and 2 chairs too quickly when I moved in. I wish I had waited and took my time. I love your floors and wall color :)

Mike, you have a nice space there. Lots of light and plenty of cabinets for a first home! I think with a good paint job, your cabinets will look very nice. My only suggestion is that if budget allows, you do the floor after the paint job (less prep of the floors!). However, if there is only enough money for one of the three at this time, I think you are right in doing the floors before moving in. Rantontoo's point about the floor being raised is a valid one. I am sure the installers will tear out the laminate, but nonetheless make sure there is enough room under the dishwasher. You could box it in and then if it ever needs to be removed, ruin your new floors (pre or site finished). Also today's refrigerators are super sized and with a new floor, there could be a height issue as well.

I would start out with a large, beautiful rug in warm colors (terracotta or red Oriental rug mixed with other colors. I feel sectionals often confine you in how to organize your room. I would choose a fabric couch in a neutral, not too dark color (not gray, which is on its way out and not a warm color), and add two chairs in a different color or at least a different material and style. Try to keep the height of these pieces similar. Two end tables in wood (they don't have to be the same, but make sure the heights are fairly similar and a metal and glass coffee table would look great, with table lamps or floor lamps even if you have overhead lighting, which is always harsh. Pick colors from the rug for pillows and you'll have a beautifully coordinated living space. Books, good paintings and some tall plants will add warmth and personality to your room. People too often don't add these elements and then wonder why their rooms look bare and cold. This may be more colorful than you want to go. and this is a small rug because there is carpeting underneath, but it gives you the idea of neutral furniture and how it can be made more lively with accessories, pillows, coffee table styling etc.

Personally, I’m a fan of the industrial look also and am a huge proponent of doing what you like, regardless of whether it’s trendy. That being said, from a practical perspective, I like that it is more minimal, easier to match between fixtures, and easier to clean :)

Once you have furniture in your space the chair rail will not be noticed on that side. It will not be the focal point. Your furnishings and artwork will be what people will see. Also, spaces that are completely balanced are not nearly as interesting as having a little asymmetry here and there imo.

Papa, you have a lovely home. I agree on waiting on the furniture. After you get it, I would think about what other colors you want to see in your space and go from there. After the rugs I would find curtains.

I think the tv looks great where you have it. If mounting it is going to cause it to protrude I would leave it sitting where it is now.

Just to keep this conversation going, I am not going to be keeping the white cabinet in the living room. I am still looking for ideas to put the TV on... built ins, stone wall etc. Anyone? Please and thank you!
