I have also been lusting over Monty Don's irish yews! I bought a large but rather bedraggled one on clearance at a nursery near me and it's in the ground but still looking rather yellowy. not at all like Mont's lush green ones!

I planted it in my rose garden too :)

I hope your yew perks up soon. I think it’ll be discoloured due to being potted for so long. I recon it’ll flourish now it’s in the ground. Mine are only tiny at around 20 inches tall haha I’m going to buy one more I recon, ok for £4.99 each. I’d love to see pics of your garden. :)

My standard roses, one has a bud union showing at the bottom in the pot and the other doesn’t have one showing.

When I plant them, do I cover the bud union or not?? Does anyone know? I’d like them to look identical in the ground. I haven’t a clue?

Maybe someone knows ?

I love standard roses but never tried them . Will they be in pots or the ground? I love the look of trailing plants with them. They are so romantic!

Gardeners World is a very long running British TV gardening show. Although it has gathered criticism from viewers from time to time (we gardeners are such an opinionated lot!!), the US has nothing like it. That may well be because this is such a huge country compared to Britain and with such a diversity of climates and growing conditions, it would be hard to develop a gardening show that could address it all.

Oh thanks gardengal . I may look them up on you tube . I feel lucky to have a show here , called the volunteer gardener . It covers all of Tennessee and is very pleasant to watch . one time I was crushed as this lady had at one time 200 some roses but replaced them all with deer proof perrenials . Her garden was quite lovely of course but it hurt to hear she had to give up 200 roses!

Sorry, no :-( IME, standard roses have an exceptionally high failure rate in my area and most local retailers do not offer them. Typically it will be a graft failure that causes the issue, more so with the top graft(s) than with any root grafts. I am not absolutely certain for the reasons behind the failures but typically these are very short-lived additions to PNW rose gardens. The ones I have seen survive long term are potted standards that can be relatively easily shifted into a more protected location in adverse weather. It sounds like one of yours has a root graft and the other has not. In my climate, root grafts do not need to be buried........I would assume being in the UK with a much similar climate, that might be the same with you.

Regarding your standard roses, are you quite sure one of them is grafted at the base? that isn't the usual way it's done here, the graft/scion is at the top and the canes of the rose variety are grafted onto that. In your photo both those roses look top grafted to me.

In this case, just plant your two standard roses the same way as any other. What I prefer to do is bury the base of the standard trunk perhaps just an inch below the level of the soil, maybe 2 inches but no more than that, which is a bit deeper than they are presented in the pots. Even soil level is ok, what I don't do is plant with the base showing above soil level. Standard roses can sucker more than shrub roses here, and you will have to rub off any that grow out from the straight long cane below the top graft, and from under soil level.

oh I would also advise, if it's not too late, to use a metal stake rather than a wooden one[they rot quickly].
