Universal DVD player remote?

My son with five children has no DVD player remote as they have been misplaced. I don't know the brand of their DVD players. I looked on Amazon but wasn't sure what would work. Is there such a thing as a DVD player remote that will work with all DVD players? There are movies I wanted to watch with them over Christmas. Thanks.

There are plenty of "universal" remotes on the market that will control DVD players. Basically they have a "learn" mode in which you enter a 4 digit number for the manufacturer of the device you're trying to control. The code is provided in the manual and depending on who made player, there may be several different codes to try. You just keep trying until you find the correct one.

Some cable/satellite set-top box remotes will also control a disk player. Does he have that, has he tried that?

Does the player not have buttons? Maybe a new player should be the Christmas gift to think of. New disk players can be had for $50 or less, while the Logitech Harmony controller, as an example, can cost much more.

oh well you have every type of connection on there you could get and you only need ONE! IF you have an HDMI cable that goes from your TV to the DVR player that is it that is all you need disconnect all those other cables! the HDMI is video and audio all in one cable that is the advanatage of HDMI one cable and the highest quality. The other options are only to be used if you are using devices that do not use HDMI. So plug the HDMI cable to either the DVR or the DVD depending on which one you want to use, then use the the red and white RCA jacks on the tv (it does not matter if there is a yellow one beside it that yellow is for video not audio so you will use the red and white only) plug your headphones red and white male cords in to those red and white female out jacks on the tv. That is all! leave all other cords out of the equation. As long as all of your devices that you want to connect to the tv have HDMI use that. IF your tv did not have HDMI then you would use the 3 colored ones yellow white and red that carries video on yellow and right and left audio on the red and white. Ok try that just the HDMI cable and your head phones. BE sure that the source input on the tv is set to HDMI if that is what you will be plugging the DVR or DVD into, if the source input is not selected on the tv you will not be getting the signal. This statement right here is very baffling -a 3-prong (yellow, red & white) from the TV (video out) to the three middle (audio out) jacks on the DVR. you state you are going from tv out to DVR out you can not go from out to out there has to be an IN for anything to work. But you do not need those cables so remove them completely from the equation. HDMI out from DVR to HDMI cable IN on the tv period. Headphones base unit red and white male plugs into the TV red and white female audio out jacks. Period

Cool. I thought after I posted that the SpongeBob player mite be a bit bigger than I remembered. Like the size of a 12 pack of soda, but not as tall. I only saw it once. My son lives with his mother and I went over and hooked it up for him. Pooh Bear

Your probably using the wrong type DVDs in the unit. There are different DVD-R/RW discs that cannot be used interchangeably. Using a disc made for faster recording on a DVD player that only can play slower discs can produce the symptoms and damage your DVD player. Consult your user manual for what types of DVD discs you can use. DVDs are not universally interchangeable.

Behind our TV is an electrical outlet and a cable outlet (the one with the little round cable thing that you screw the cord onto. The tv is plugged into both. The cable outlet runs into the closet on the left side of the photo. That is where all of our things are hooked up. The cable is screwed into a box, in the closet, which is made for remote sensors. There are "outlets" on the box, which you use to connect your dvd/vcr/satellite/surround sound into. The remote sensor is installed near the bottom left of the fireplace. But you can also get a sensor that just peeks out from your tv...very small and not noticeable. There is a basic cable wire (very cheap) that runs from the sensor on the wall, into the closet and also plugs into that same box as everything else. Then there are small sensors that you place on your dvd player/satellite receiver/surround sound. They just stick on the front of them. Now you can control all of your items even though you can't see them, via the remote sensor. I'm sure this sounds completely confusing, because I'm not good at explaining things like this. All of our wires do run through the walls, but you can also run them through the attic if you need to, or just do small holes, or even just "hide" the necessary cords. We have just one cable cord that goes from the box behind the tv into the closet, and then one cable cord that goes from the remote sensor on the wall into the closet. So we only really ran 2 cable cords. We purchased our supplies from smarthome.com. The whole setup was under $100.

Thank you both for the replies and good suggestions. I'm going to be over there this weekend and will check out the situation. A new one might be the answer. They do stream most things but there are a lot of things available only on DVDs, not to mention family movies. Appreciate your help as always.

The best approach will be the cheapest approach: find out what brand and model and buy a replacement. I've tried universal remotes in the past. They are expensive, the programming can be a pain, and they rarely work flawlessly.

The best remote purchase I have ever made was my Logitech 'Harmony' remote. It turns my tv, amplifier and cable box on with a push of a button. Turns them all off in the same way.

If I want to watch a movie through my DVD player, A push of another button turns the player and tv on and tunes the amp to the DVD player channel.

I'm glad yours works well. That was one that I bought several years ago, but I could never get it to do all of the commands for all of my devices. 80% of the commands could be programmed, but I still needed to pick up a couple of the other remotes for some things. Maybe they've improved since I tried mine.
