As it's the off season for many of us with roses, please share your Clematis photos. It would be good to see who is growing what, and where. Or just list your favourites if you prefer.
Here are some of mine.. I shall be adding two or three more by next Spring, don't know which ones though, so hope for some ideas here.

O.T. Why do my Clematis dry up & croak?????
Comments (6)Large flowering clems group II are known to have wilt for first several years of their life. Sometimes it is not a wilt but because stems are so brittle any direct contact to them as to location, watering might accidentaly damage it. Many clems are known to have lower leaves yellowing and browning and eventually ugly looking lower part of plant. If your clem flowered just fine but then some parts starting to die it is pretty much normal as many perennials start looking battered and ugly after they finish their bloom. Do not believe those ads which promise you continuous bloom from spring to fall- none of the clems will do that ;) Anyway, carefully remove dead stem, you still can add gently fertilizer and some good compost to plant base and water well. If you planted your clem deep enough and soil was well prepared by next spring you will have lots of new strong growth. I am pruning my all early blooming clems now- it does not hurt them and gives them chance to regrow new foliage before frost, and even possibly bloom later on. The only clem one should be careful with pruning are group one- early blooming macropetala and alpina- once they are several years old they will resent any disturbance. Cutting into old stems of well established clems presents a problem as well but by that time wilt is usually not a problem....See MoreO/T Breezy could use a lift

Comments (15)I've certainly been known to comment on an old thread revival - but this was mainly during a phase when numerous people, not regulars if I remember rightly, kept bringing up old threads apparently without realising they were old, and answering the OPs questions as if it they were still current 10 or more years later. I think this may have been happening a lot because for a while Houzz was putting random undated pictures and posts in the right hand column from different times and different parts the website, maybe to attract people to explore more. I don't think they're doing this, or not so much, now. As far as I remember, I simply (helpfully, I hope?!) pointed out it was an old thread, since otherwise others would continue going to a lot of trouble to answer the original question, assuming (or so I thought) that it was a new/current question and that the OP was still around and needing answers.. and it was when the question was specifically related to the individual asking it, eg asking for recommendations for a particular purpose or conditions, rather than a more general discussion like that lovely, and still relevant thread Cori Ann linked to. I wonder if I may on occasion have been impatient and cut someone off at some point, unnecessarily? If so, I do apologise and will be extra careful in future not to do so. Now usually I sit on the side of the tub and take a sponge bath but I had a hankering for an old fashioned sit down in the tub bath and figured since both of my GS's are here, if I got stuck they could pull me out. Wrong again! Now I know why I didn't post to the one about your most embarrassing moment...it was because it hadn't happened yet...until today. I managed to get down in the tub by sitting on the end and sliding down into it. Then I threw a towel over me and called David in to pull the lever up to hold the water in and turn the water on. Okay, the tub gets full so I yell and he comes back and turns the water off for me. I soak, and soak and scrub and scrub and I smell so nice and squeaky clean so I yell for David, throw a towel across me and he comes in and lets the water out for me. I'm all set now, right? but wait, I can't get out of the tub. So, I call David back in and ask if he thinks he can pull me up. Says he can IF I can brace my feet and push. I couldn't. The tub was too wet. All I did was slide my butt around and fart. Then I get both of the boys in there but Shane was about as much use as the puddle of water squishing around under my butt. Next, I had David pull 18 towels out of the cabinet and sit them side by side down the tub in two rows thinking I could push my feet on them and get some leverage. That didn't work either. All it did was get all of the towels wet because the faucet drips. I ask David if it would embarrass him to see me naked and he said not as much as it would to have the fire department come out here (which I had already mentioned). So, I throw off the towel, he closes his eyes and tries again. No luck again. So, I have no choice but to call 911. Neither of the boys would do it because they were laughing too hard so I had them stretch the phone into the bathroom and I did it myself. Here come the sirens and there I sit with a towel draped over my lucious bod. I don't want to hear any more complaining and how you look in a bathing suit because no matter how bad it is, it can't be any worse than me sitting in the tub with NOTHING but a towel draped over me which I already know is going to have to come off. Here comes three guys walking in the bathroom, three of which are total strangers to me, and the first one says, "Okay, just what is the problem? Are you stuck in the tub or just can't get out?" I said, "I have heart problems and can't lift my own weight and the boys aren't strong enough to pull me up". He says, "That's no problem. If we can get you stood up and out of the tub, can you walk?" Walk? I could run and hide in the closet if I could get out of the tub!! So, one gets ahold under one arm and the other gets ahold of my other hand and ZIP, there I am standing stark naked in the bathtub. I rather testily said, "I can get out by myself but thank you for helping me". He just grinned and said, "well, we'll wait out in the hallway in case you're too weak to walk or anything". Now, all of my towels are wet, they had removed my clothing from the bathroom floor so I have to wrap a wet towel around me and show up in the hallway before they'll leave. They leave and here comes the landlady..."What's the matter? I saw an amublance down here". I said, "Are you sure you really want to know?" and she said she did so I told her. After she quit rolling around on the floor and telling me I should have called her so she could bring down her camcorder and we could have won $10,000 on Worlds Funniest Home Video's, she called her MIL who actually owns the place and told her she needed to get a shower hookup in here for me and ASAP. Said it would be installed by next weekend. In the meantime, if I absolutely HAVE to sit down in the tub again, call her and her hubby and they'll rescue me. I told her she'd better get a good whiff of me while I still smell like I just took a bath because I won't be taking another one until the shower is installed. She sniffed and left. Now it's just me and the boys and everytime I look at them, they look at each other and snort trying not to laugh. They're smarter than I thought! Dottie...See More

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agomarlorena...your garden is stunning. What's amazing is that you have so many plants packed in, but they each look pruned and trained and well-tended. If I may ask, how big is your garden? I'm curious to know what size piece of land you have that many plants growing on.
I love all the different ways you've used your clematis as well. I never thought about having them grow through hydrangeas! I have many of those.
This is my only clematis in the ground currently...Nelly Moser.
I have about 10 more (of different varieties, mostly type 2's)to plant and I'm looking around my garden for places to put them. I want to get creative and do more than just trellises.

6 years agoI have quite a few clematis, but not a lot bloomed this yr. Had to dig up a few of them a couple yrs ago when we did the septic re-do, and I kinda think they must be sorta like peonies. They don't like to be dug up! Takes 'em awhile to recover.
Here's a few of mine from this season:

I think this one is VITICELLA PURPUREA PLENA ELEGANS. Very small blooms.

6 years agoOh marlorena! Thank you for starting this lovely thread. I love clematis almost as much as my roses and keep adding them but they aren't as full as yours yet . I love your prince Charles . I have that as well . It will hopefully play nice with " kiss me kate " and the blue toned butterfly bush it is near. Your Durandi is lovely too , I must add that . They all look lush and beautiful!
Rosylady when you say you want to be more creative that trellises ... do you like a kitschy style at all ? I have a bird feeder on top of a ladder with honeysuckle and another feeder ready for when I find another ladder . I really enjoy the look .
Oldrosarian I love " Willy"! I see brushwood had it so it's in my shopping cart. I haven't tried the alpinas or the ground cover / shrubby clematis yet so I plan to this spring.

I don't have too many photos of my clemmies and I've posted a couple of these a while back on another forum, but I have some new photos here too.
Comtesse de Bouchaud was my first clematis and still my favorite. I'm terribly inept in training her on a 6-ft obelisk, which is also shorter than it should be for CdB so I usually connect it to the balcony with a couple of ropes as it seems she wants to reach to the skies. Sure enough, she finds her way onto the balcony and happily meanders around.
And here she is finding her way all way to the opposite side:

Sjn- I second brushwood ! Also bluestone has great sales . Don't pay full price on Clem's because they will almost always go half price before spring . Great value ! And another fantastic one is silver star vinery. The size of her plants was fabulous!
Marlorena - I'm glad you liked mine! I really wish I could find an ID on the one . It was on clearance because it had no tag and any photo search I have done hasn't turned up a match.
Rosy lady your urn idea is a great one! Never would have thought of that . I had saved this photo to remind myself to try this, maybe you'll like it too .
I got one of these tubs for 5$!! At a yard sale so I think I may do this .
Another no id clearance
This was labeled comptess d Bouchard but I'm not sure that's what it is . This was a late fall bloom so maybe the cold brought out the stripes?
Oh marlorena I meant to say andromeda is great but really small . It took 3 years to reach the top of my 4 ft trellis .so you may be able to tuck it in somewhere! It blooms twice for me and did try to put out a thrird round this fall but we had a week of frosts way before normal .
