Small farmhouse table, anyone experienced in woodworking?
Comments (51)Hi EQ, Speaking of "as long as I can remember".. Maybe I just read your post twice and that's why I thought you had made two tables or possibly equated your apple pie recipe with making furniture, who knows. I can almost remember the days when I could remember. Senility is the "E-Ticket" of life. The un-induced double vision is like the metro bus that that awaits you on every corner. o_O I've never missed a bus in my life but sure do miss being able to see straight. At least with senility you keep forgetting you have it. You can't remember that you can't remember. I used to be able to spot things a mile away and now all I see are spots. I was reading another post where someone was talking (if I can remember correctly) about miscommunication with contractors and architects and was going to be relaxing with an "adult beverage" and the fist thing that came to mind was "yuk-!", prune juice is not what you want to be drinking if you want to relax. Then it dawned on me... Tequila. I should remember to ask my doctor about that. Not for me but for my friends so they'll talk louder so I could possibly hear them. I don't think I've ever bought a new piece of furniture that made it through the doors of my house. I have bought some Grants' specials to gift to others knowing the piece it replaced would be tossed to the curb though. It is amazing what people consider garbage. People used to think I made and refinished furniture because I enjoyed it but that was the farthest from the truth. I just like nice things and you could not buy them at G. Fox et al. So now that your table is done and you're anxious to have some people over for dinner the moment your chairs arrive what's on the menu for the christening?...See Moreplease show me your farmhouse table that doubles as island
Comments (7)Thank you guys so much - I thought this thread was going to fall into oblivion so I am happy to see responses. One thing I noticed was that both of you have, in one form or another, a free side without chairs blocking access. Today when I was bringing in groceries I thought about how it wouldn't work so well to have to lift things over chair tops to set them down on the table. Hhhhm, gets me thinking. I really like the concept of making it 1/2 "real island" like yours budge1 - and that only uses up 1 side while leaving 3 for seating. And antiquesilver, your kitchen is really pretty. I think the table adds a lot of attractiveness to your kitchen so this is showing me I am on the right path for my own kitchen asthetically....See MoreFarmhouse table for eat-in kitchen instead of huge island?
Comments (5)I would narrow in : drop leaf and/or trestle style . Yes to the idea but particulars matter. Avoid table legs being in the way if possible.....drop leaf let's you be flexible with usage and space . You can have local woodworkers make you one exactly to your requirements. Do you have vintage places or craigs list you can search...sometimes you can find an old farmhouse table with the right top...and have a new base made/etc. This is a great way to put character in your space....See MoreFarmhouse kitchen table, round or rectangular???
Comments (11)Dianne -- yes, I would not want to linger over a meal on stools. But a quick breakfast on a stool isn't that bad. As I said it's where you "eat" rather than "dine". We have an interesting story about this work island. We got it from the Scottish Rite in our town when they closed and auctioned everything off. This very table was where we prepped DD's wedding dinner (as we rented the Scottish Rite kitchen for our wedding kitchen because it was right across the street from the reception venue) so it has memories. But I think you'd be happier with a rectangle especially if it is in the middle of the room. As far as "old" rectangular tables -- they're popular now so there should be a lot to chose from -- real antiques as well as those that are made to look like antiques....See MoreRelated Professionals
