Best size for a wet bar sink

We are currently refinishing our basement, and part of that finish work is putting in a wet bar. The cabinets will be standard 24" depth with probably a 25" countertop. The size of the sink is what we're questioning. 15, 16, or 17" diameter?

There's no right answer. Depends on what you imagine using it for, as well as how valuable the counter on either side is. Will you just be getting water as a mixer, or might you rinse glasses there or have it full of ice to chill beers? etc. You can go to a local kitchen shop and get a look at the various sizes in person so you can see which would feel comfortable to use...

We plan on putting in a 24x34 beverage center and have a full-sized fridge in the basement. Water, washing glasses etc..

Most houses in the neighborhood where I grew up have wet bars of varying sizes and complexities. Only one, which was basically its own room, got a lot of use. The wet part, that is. The wet, for bar purposes, was used mostly by the hired bartenders at big blowouts. Nowadays, a lot of disposable plastic cups are used instead of glasses, and even when glasses are used, the caterers usually bring dishwasher trays full of extra glasses rather than washing them as they're used. Everyone I know who used to have party glasses for hundreds, rents nowadays. No one would mix drinks with municipal water, they use bottled water for that. Does any of this sound familiar? What would you use the sink for? Will you have cocktail garnish in the wine fridge for prep there at the bar? If your use isn't related to drinks service, per se, then it's more of a question of how you will use it than how others do. Is it for getting a drink of tap water? Washing glasses? Alternative prep sink for cooking in the main kitchen area? Handwashing? Making hot beverages? Perhaps with an instant hot? And/or reverse osmosis?

as in 18 inch in the middle...15 inch on the ends??....as opposed to two 24 in cabinets? I might opt for two good sized cabinets and install them at 20 in up from counter....just a personal choice...really does depend on what you want the cabinets for. With guests using the space, I think it's better that more of the various glassware types are in sight with the opening of fewer cabinet doors rather than 3 cabinets being opened/closed to find a certain wine or drinking glass.. I might do two 21 inch cabinets with single doors and 3 inches of decorative molding on the ends to "spiff it up". Some people, if it's just display would do open shelves..maybe one glass doored cabinet....think what you'll use it for..are the visuals more important than actual use??

Where is this wet bar? In a family room? In a basement? In the living room? Location will make a difference. In certain locales (well away from the regular kitchen) it could be nice to have just as a extra sink and fridge for regular family living. In other locales (like right in the living room off the kitchen ) it could be redundant unless you are big entertainers.

You will still need substantial room for the plumbing P trap, and other bits. Without a faucet, the idea seems rather questionable and prone to contamination and smells from the organic matter in coffee and other beverages.

What is the overall width of the counter space in your plan? The smaller the counter, the smaller the sink. You need room on the counter for blenders, ice bucket, other tools, and a place to fix things.

Most bar sinks are too small to do much at all. Are you sure you need water in this location? Or can you take items to a nearby kitchen to do the cleaning needed and have some water available at the bar for the needs you might have for water. Most people have eliminated wet bars unless it is the only water source nearby. If you decide you still need a sink, take the items you plan on placing under a faucet and see what size you need for them to make easy clearance to make the sink worthwhile. For example, some red wine glasses are fairly large. Can you rinse them easily and is the faucet you select high enough for easy clearance. A bigger sink will be much more useful than one of the smaller "bar sinks".
