Imalm53 - I usually avoid offering opinions on color because its so subjective and personal, and because monitors affect what you see. But yours is one of my favorite kitchens. Plus I appreciated the step-by-step granite install photos that you posted awhile back. So here goes . . . I agree with some of the previous posters that bold colors would detract from your beautiful cabinets and granite. But I LOVE the colors of your accents . . . burgundy and yellow. Those are the colors of my kitchen. Sort of a mustard yellow on the walls with a burgundy rust on my window soffit. I love it for me, but I dont have the dramatic cabinets and granite that you have. (Its not done yet, so I dont have photos. ) I do like your idea of putting color on the fireplace wall. Hows about putting your burgundy on that wall, with your yellow on the mantle trim. Then using a softer coordinating color on the rest of the room. Then pulling those colors into your window treatment to tie it together. I was going to try to do a mock up but my monitor is playing havoc with the colors (getting mauve and some strange yellows). I just did a search and saw Benjamin Moores Pottery Barn Collection. Looks beautiful . . . at least on my monitor. Can you imagine doing some combination of this? (not sure if you need the green, though) Benjamin Moore's Navajo white Wedgewood gray Brick red Hampton green HTH!

I have a grey kitchen that opens up to a yellow-green sunroom. I would like the rooms to have coordinating decor--feeling like an extension of each other. I am planning to incorporate a more buttery/mustard yellow with the grey in the kitchen...so the sunroom yellow and window treatments as they are won't work. I'm thinking to add the buttery/mustard yellow and white window treatments in the kitchen. But not sure what to do with sunroom. Should I paint the walls in the sunroom the same color as kitchen and change the window treatment to a coordinating pattern with those in the kitchen? Or paint the sunroom more of a buttery/mustard yellow...a paler version...and then do grey toned window treatment (maybe same pattern as in kitchen but grey)? I'd love any suggestions for best way to tie the rooms together with those colors, without feeling overwhelmed. Note: The furniture in the sunroom is NOT what I'm planning for there...it's only temporary. I have shared some pics to show layout, and colors. You will need to look beyond the kid art and clutter! Thanks for any help!

I agree 100% with groveraxle on the way to get started. In addition, I’ve been thinking a lot about the appearance of your living room being so long and narrow. I think something that helps create that feeling is the darker color on the back wall. Generally, dark colors feel like they recede, and light colors tend to come forward, so with the darker tv wall, it makes the room seem longer and narrower than it actually is. If that doesn’t bother you, then it’s not really an issue. But if it’s something that you’d like to address, I’d suggest that you paint that wall the same colors as all your other walls. Or, do something interesting with that wall to create a stronger focal point, and do it in such a way that wall seems to come forward a little bit, or even helps to make the room feel wider. You had mentioned earlier the idea about adding some stone to the wall, you could also use wood, tile, or wallpaper, depending on what appeals to you most. I don’t know if the stone is considered out dated or not, but I was certainly able to find sample photos of it here on Houzz, and if you love the look, I don’t think it matters if it’s “in” or “out” because trends always cycle around, and some of the best designers are brilliant because they know when to break the rules. If you don’t have a fireplace, I think a stone wall could be an outstanding choice. Here are a few looks for your consideration: This one features a full wall of stone, but see how nicely the paint color echoes the color of the stone, so the attention is drawn to that wall because of it’s texture. You could get a similar look with wallpaper or a subtle stencil design if you don’t want to do stone. I think there’s too many floating shelves here, but one or two on each side of your tv could be a nice place to display some smaller art, candlesticks, glass vases/art, a collection of some kind, and/or small scale plants. Notice how tall the drapes are to create greater height in the room? This one is probably close to what you were referring to about a center column of stone on the wall. Notice how it comes into the room by a few inches and the sides are finished. It feels like a fireplace. One of the special things about this design is the warm lighting under the floating console which keeps the look very modern. With the raised wood (bamboo I think) panels and strong horizontal lines of this wall treatment, this really expands the feeling of width in the room. And with this look, you need almost no ornamentation. And this one I included, just to show you how gorgeous a console can be all on it’s own. The style of this look is timeless and will never go out of style. And again, styling of the console is very simple. Just a low round bowl of what looks like one kind of succulents. Very clean and modern, but very organic feeling too. Let us know what look appeals to you, or post some other photos that you’re inspired by. Even number in different sizes? (yet, all are square) Odd numbers are always better than even for me personally. p.s. 16 x 20 are rectangles, not squares.
