Second Try At AVs (Somewhat Lengthy)
Comments (10)Thank you, everyone! Our water where we live, out in the country, is hard water. Luckily, I can collect rainwater and I use it on my other house plants. They all love it. Trouble is that when it's in my watering can, the water becomes cold and I have to add warm tap water so I don't shock my plants. Irina, thank you for the photo tip. Suprisingly, the light from the living room floor lamp, the light over the sink and the celing florescent lights in the kitchen were all on. The one lady who was where I bought my AV I know from volunteering at our local community theatre. I'll ask her the next time I see her the AV lady's name. Oh and my plant is in a small plastic pot. The little kettle is wooden and just for decoration to hide the black plastic pot. I have an AV book published by Sunset from 1974 (sixth printing) as well as other house plant books. Just thought I would let you know to those people of interest. Hmm, maybe when I go to Lowe's again, I might pick up another AV. :-). They don't take up as much room as my other plants do, lol. Comments (85)Hi island. Our banquette was built (several years ago) by the same guy who did our cabinets. There is no back on it ... just loose pillows, which we sort of toss around depending on how many people are actually sitting on it. It does have storage. There are sliding doors on the long front of it (this is not easy storage to access but it's for the cookbooks I pull out once a year, etc.) and a "morgue" drawer that comes out from the end (where we keep all the dog leashes, collars, etc. Super handy storage!). I will take some measurements tonight or tomorrow for you, but I recall that the seat is about 19" tall after the cushion is on. I made the cushion extra thick, 4 inches, and raised it up a little because I prefer to sit a little higher at a table. The chairs came with the house and I sort of painted them on a whim. I used Annie Sloan's chalk paint, which was OK, although I'm not sure it was any better than any other kind of paint, other than not having to prime them first. They do seem to be wearing well though. Hope that helps for now. More to follow....See MoreDIY Budget Kitchen Refresh Reveal *9 photos
Comments (34)Wow, Kathy, I think I'm as impressed with your "can do" attitude and common sense as your impressive kitchen redo. Thanks so much for sharing. Love all your color sections, especially the way the fabric in your kitchen window curtain pulls it all together. Before, the kitchen was chaotic, and now your colors are so soothing. Also love the way you rearranged the cabinets to maximize your space and storage. By the way, I know what you mean about measuring as that scares me too when I'm spending real money. I do have two suggestions for when you save up more $$$. The first is that you order full extension drawers, or trays, to go inside the large base cabinet with the double doors on the right side of the range. I ordered from Quikdrawers.com for the cabinets in my dining room and am extremely happy with the company and the result. They make a quality product, the guy who helps you (Keith) knows his stuff, and spacing between the trays is fully adjustable to maximize storage for what works best for you. Those pull outs certainly beat standing on your head and rearranging to see what's in the back. The second suggestion is to add a light rail and led puck lights run by batteries that you can just tap to get them to come on. My daughter-in-law knows a number of her neighbors who have used that approach and that it works pretty well if you don't want to go the electrician route. Those lights should be available at the big box stores or online elsewhere. Again, five stars on your project all the way around. It is well worth all the time, stress, and worry. Also, your low budget is hard to believe....See MoreRefresh it or gut it? Tricky kitchen layout.
Comments (39)My old galley kitchen had a 3' aisle and I had no problem with it, so I don't think I would find a 3.5' aisle too tight, especially given that the peninsula side wouldn't have upper cabs. However, I don't think I'm a fan of the peninsula because it leaves us only one aisle into the actual kitchen. With the island set up we have now, there are two, so if I am cooking and my husband comes in from outside and needs to get to the sink, he can access it without walking past me, or if we both come in with groceries, etc., one can go to the far side of the island and the other cut in on the side closest to the door....See Morecpartist
