Stone house TV room needs serious revamping
Hi all. We just moved back to Canada from Japan and are ready to rethink our tv/family room. It's a bit of an awkward space because it has a wide arch entrance on one wall, another entrance with door that swings into the room on second wall, and a large window on the third wall.
I am at a loss as to how to decorate this room to make it functional for the 4 of us to comfortably watch tv and would love to hear/see your suggestions on furnishings and layout. We are two adults and two young boys.
It's an old stone home (i.e. no insulation) so in the winter especially, we keep the door closed to stop heat from going into the hallway and upstairs.
The room is very bright in the morning when the sun comes in the window, but then quite dark for the rest of the day.
I've attached some photos. Please disregard all furniture except the brown leather recliner. The couch is too big for this room and we will get a flat screen tv and something new to put it on. Everything else will go. Please excuse the mess - I'm living in a house of moving boxes.
The room is 13' x 13.5' and other measurements are as follows:
1) East wall with window - 5' of wall space left of the window but unusable if we open the door from the hallway, 4.5' of wall space to the right of the wall
2) South wall - 13.5' of wall space
3) West wall - 8' of wall space and 5.5' wide archway entrance from dining room
4) North
wall - 7' of wall space between archway and door to hall.
Apologies - 2 of the pics are quite dark because of light coming in the window. They are mostly just to give an idea of where the doorways are.

6 years agoCornering and angling furniture in a small room just emphasizes the fact that you don't have room for it. I would put the TV on the wall left of the arch, It would save square footage and open up the space if you had a flat screen on a credenza just 25% wider than the TV. Its worth the $$ to move connections so your room functions well. Put the sofa on the wall and hang a big piece of art 5" above it (no wider than 75% of the sofa's width. Angle the chair left of the window, just outside the door swing area. Add a side table and lamp (table should be 1" above or below the chair arm, and with the lamp the two should bring the height to 58-64" above the floor.) I think a lighter paint color will brighten things, with drapes to match the wall color hung as shown below (both visual tricks to make the room seem larger.)

Comments (21)Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers. Well it is Sunday and we got through the reunion all right. Actually it went great. We had 12 classmates out of 42 show up and 25 little kids. My folks rushed home and were there late Friday night and the girls stayed at my sisters that night. My folks put up 2 pools and also got one of those giant little tykes water slides that inflate. People showed up around 1:30 and stayed until after 8. We all had so much fun, 2 of my sisters came over and helped out with the kids, they had fun on the water slide and pools, my dad got one of the horses out and they had pony rides, he also had his full sized popcorn maker going and they ate tons of popcorn and we also had popsicles and watermelon to cool off. I made too much food as usual and my mil made several salads, we just grilled out hotdogs and had a lot of fun. Those that wanted to had brought beer so we just sat around talking about the high school days and comaparing current notes. I can tell you it was a blast and took my mind off dh. He did come down and had fun too. We go see the surgeon on Tuesday and see what he has to say. I think he is planning on doing more tests and another CT scan. They got his pain under control. They think that it was a combo of the gall stones and they discovered an infection in his intestinal area so put him on iv antibiotics. His blood sugar has really dropped since Friday and we are working on getting it under control. The Dr. thinks that the gall stones and infection brought out the diabetes. She is positive about it and that with diet, exercise, cutting out sugar and oral meds that we can get things under control. They won't do anything about the gallsones and hernia until the diabetes is under control. All in all it really has been a long week but in a way I am glad that it happened. DH hasn't had a physical in 11 years and is overweight. While there I asked Dr. to do a full work up on him and am curious to see what his cholestoral is. The hardest thing is that he really isn't a fruit or veggie person. I am sure you know that between the kids and I most of our diet is veggies and fruits and meat is a side dish. Right now his blood sugar has been staying around 180 which is in the high range of what the diabetes consultant wants but is way better than what it was before. Now to try and catch up on my sleep, we are also in the processes of moving the girls and Hayden down stairs and had carpet put down on Friday so the house has stuff every where. My mom is going to come up on Tuesday and stay a couple of days to help me catch up. With me being pregnant and Dan's hernia the furniture moving will have to wait until we get some family to come up and help move things around our 2 story house. Comments (23)We, too, have a big stone fireplace that is a focal point. There are windows on both sides, so no place for a tv there, either. We opted for a built-in cabinet on the right-hand wall. It is recessed, and I have shutters that close over it (although I haven't installed them yet--it's on my "to do" list). The other side of that wall is the master bedroom. So having a recessed cabinet in the living room allowed me to have a similar recessed cabinet in the master bedroom. Although we were originally going to use it as a tv area on the bedroom side, I opted to make it built-in bookshelves. A benefit to having the recessed area in the living room is having a shelf that I can display something above the tv--breakable things that I don't really want the kitties messing with. We have lighting (on it's own switch) up there, to show off whatever I'm displaying. Below the tv is another shelf where the other electronics are. There is another set of shutters to cover up all that crap...I mean, all that very important electronic equipment. And their cords, since the plug in is located in the recessed area. The fireplace is on the North wall. TV in the East wall. We have a couch on the South side, centered and facing the fireplace. A loveseat and recliner on the West wall, facing the tv. The recliner is kind-of diagonal. We have an open floorplan, and the kitchen is on the Southwest side. From there, I can watch the fireplace AND the tv, which is kind of nice. Comments (26)I didnt have anything nice to say when you said 5 grand and hiring out. But now since we are talking illegitimacy here we go. Since you still dont have a floor plan as recommended, I have my doubts you have the knowledge to DIY or hire out for 5 grand. Your inspiration pictures are nice but you either need more money to hire out or more knowledge to DIY. You can buy cabinets and appliances all you want but if you cant install them, install the plumbing, move electrical, do flooring, do structural work with the wall, then FORGET IT. Oh and get a permit (probably wont) so you can ensure it is done right and legal. When we say legal, we are talking about what some would call an "in-law suite". People typically think of a separate dwelling for older folks who need someone close but want their space. Same idea for younger folks who could use a separate space. I feel it is an great idea to have, however, some zoning locations do not allow it. The permit would tell you if it was ok or not to do. Your insurance also needs to know about it. Comments (5)We are three people living the, me hubby and our 3yr old. I bpught the furniture for the house I used to live in thus im sitting with te prob. I just memtiond the corner couch, can it be a option to rather use it. Other option would be to sell both sets and buy something that fits the space. I'll get the plan of the house and post it. 6 years agoSince the room is strictly for TV, I would still put it left of the arch. Then Try a 85" chaise sofa in front of the window with the chaise extending from the wall right of the window into the floor space. It would look like Cara's first drawing but the sofa would scoot over to the wall where the chaise portion would be. It doesn't have to be crammed against the wall or against the curtains/window. If you can, get a reversible chaise so you can switch sides if you decide to or move elsewhere. Add a swivel/glider/recliner and an upholstered storage cube or hassock for a coffee table and an extra seat. Pick a solid color for seating and something for pop with the hassock and some throw pillows. These are just for concept.
