Kitchen Remodel Completed - Now Unhappy
Comments (53)Have to agree with nearly all of the above posters! I think that perhaps what is putting you off is the linear pattern of the limestone and the glass mosaic tiles against the swirly pattern of the granite (which is gorgeous, and actually looks quite similar to the Aran cream I just picked for my BR). Sort of like wearing a striped top with a paisley skirt. The colours are OK, but something isn't quite perfect. However, saying that, it certainly isn't so bad that I would even contemplate taking it out and starting over. Once you place all 'your stuff' back on the counters, your eye won't be so drawn to what you are perceiving as not the ultimate vision you had. I think it's actually really helpful for people to see this, and then perhaps rethink how they might plan a backsplash with a busy granite. To be honest, when I scroll through pictures of finished kitchens, I think the BS is the area where most people miss the mark. But that's only my opinion, and full disclosure, it took me over 3 years of living with a painted backsplash until I found the perfect one (and who knows, maybe not everyone else thinks it's wonderful, but I do)....See MoreUnhappy with my new kitchen
Comments (53)Mary - take a deep breath. I think it will turn out fine. It's often an "uh-oh" moment when things start going in and there's bits and pieces, but not everything. I do think that you need to look for some things to lighten stuff up. If the counter that someone posted a photo of earlier in the thread is an indication, it may be a bit too dark...if you can go with a light colored countertop, it will help to balance things a bit. Also, look for a light colored backsplash. Both items will help. You showed a picture without real lighting - it was at night with a singular light - casting shadows and dark areas where there won't really be ones when the lights are all installed. Oh, and while taking about lighting - have lots of lighting...looks like you have a good number installed in the ceiling from what I can see. We went with a dark floor and cabinets. And we over-lit (at least according to our GC who thought that what I had was overkill). But you know what, I knew that we would have a lot of dark surface that would absorb light and it's way easier to dim lights than install more later. But, I would say that I'd do my best to try to change the counter to something lighter if possible - that's what we did and it works. You see in the examples that nosoccermom posted with a dark floor and cabinets, people have the lighter counters and a light backsplash to help balance things out....See MorePlease help-think I've blown it with kitchen
Comments (45)Sophie, an artist friend of mine told me that when we get older, our eyes tend to see more yellow in things. What looks to my son as blue probably appears as a blue green to me. Lizzy, keep that in mind as you get advice. A professional designer is still a good idea, no matter what age....See MoreHelp! Unhappy with my water-based-polyurethane refinished wood floors
Comments (10)I think most of the "warmer" tone you get with oil-based poly comes from the absorption of the poly directly into the wood on the first coat; i.e., it has a slight "staining" effect (this is based on my own observations when we do site-finished floors on our projects). Since your wood has already been sealed with water-base poly, putting oil-based poly on top of it (even assuming it would adhere properly) probably wouldn't have much of a "warming" effect. My recommendation would be to add some water-based stain to the water-based poly you're already using and try applying a coat or two of that to get the "warmer" tone you're looking for....See MoreRelated Professionals
