If they came out for free and you picked their brains, and now plan to use their ideas and do it yourself, then you should either do it yourself, or hire one of them to spend more time on a more in-depth plan that takes into account your desire for a balanced but not mirror-image plan. If you paid a nominal fee for their time, you got what you paid for, an off-the-cuff design that is not ready to go. If you need to tweak the plant selection, you'll need to pay them extra, or use the free advice you get here, which may or may not be worth more than you're paying for it. The alternative is to study and learn on your own for a while, and then choose the plants when you know enough about them and about the principles of good design to pull it off. I'll give you a hint: you can balance the plantings from one side to the other by choosing a plant or group of plants with a similar visual weight to the ones opposite. However, the fact that some of the plants you mention will lose their foliage in winter, some won't, some will flower at certain times and others won't, will also affect the design differently at different times of the year....See Moreold house - need ideas for tricky front hall/stairway
Comments (21)I was about to suggest radiator covers and then teacats beat me to it! I would do a radiator cover and then mount a shelf and appropriate sized mirror over that. I am going to be the naysayer about hooks on that wall at the bottom of the stair. You don't have a ton of space there, and that means that the bottom of the stair will look even smaller and more crowded when you have a bunch of coats hanging on the pegs or hooks. I would use that wall for the 14 pix that you discussed. Use the upstairs wall to do the family geneology items. By the way, I don't think the window at the top of the stairs looks high at all. It is in proportion to the upper floor. Once you hang artwork on the wall to the right of that window, it will connect with the window and make it all work together. The topiary you have there only accentuates the height of the window, as it is still taller than the top of the topiary. If you want something there, I would look for a small arts and crafts style plant stand and put a large vase or a plant with trailing ends like an ivy on the stand. Or you could stand a large vase in the corner with tall twigs and grasses coming out of it. Your home is fabulous - I am SOOOO jealous. It feels like a place that I could just walk in and be at home....See MoreNeed budget friendly ideas for front of house.
Comments (12)This is a wake-up call. If you do not like to be woken-up, do not read it, for you will only get agitated. I'm not being nice here, just honest. Your premises look neglected. First of all I would put all my energy in removing the rest of the overgrowths and removing the weeds. This house would look so much better if it only had well defined pathways. The lawn needs some help (= work) too. Bohemian/Farmhouse doesn't equal sloppy. We can hardly see the house, because so much greenery is too close to it. I love pergola's, but in your case that would only add to the clutter. Your house looks half of what it could be worth. The roof looks like it could use some cleaning too. Maybe you can get another color sprayed on it, for this one is rather drab. That opens up whole new possibilities for the color(s) of the house as well. I'd go for a nice big deck, where you can place some nice farmhouse (swing) chairs. I'd place more lights from the ceiling part that's over the deck, to create a more luxurious feeling. Windowframes, doors and deck all in the same warm tone of wood would become a farmhouse real well, but with another color of the roof some more splashy color like fresh blue would become possible for all but the deck. With the roof this color: off-white is a good choice. Maybe you can whitewash the bricks? Please help the garage to a lighter color, for now it looks like the mouth of a dark and dangerous cave. I'd definitely get rid of the oversized number on the garage door. Looks like its wearing convict's clothes and that's his inmate number. Now you are either angry with me, or thankful that I pointed out some much needed things. This house and yard need upkeep, ongoing upkeep. Some decent, honest sweat....See MoreDianne B
