Roses that are happy in afternoon sun, in a warm climate.
Bart joked in another thread that we should have a thread about those roses that are happy in full afternoon sun, in a warm climate. As it seems a lot of our gardens are getting hotter, I think that is a good idea. Here in Crete, this last summer has been one heat wave after another, so to kick things off....

Comments (6)Under the conditions you describe, I don't think your rose options are too limited. During the main rose growing season, getting all day sun from noon onward is at least 6-8 hours of sun, and that's enough for most roses even if some of it is filtered. If you find the sun is more limited than you thought, my hybrid musks have all bloomed very well in filtered shade all day under limbed up pine trees. Being in a colder zone where Noisettes and anything on fort doesn't survive, I won't presume to advise you there, but I'm suspecting that your ordered roses you list would be happy under these conditions. Comments (6)Hi Bart, I grow Lavender Lassie in a spot that gets some sun in early spring, but once the trees leaf out it is in pretty Stygian shade all the rest of the season (May-October). It grows as a big sprawly shrub and blooms beautifully (big flush) in spring. No bloom after, however. I'm trying a baby LL in a sunnier spot, to see if I get re-bloom, though others on this forum have told me LL is basically a once-bloomer even in sun. My only hesitation about LL in your conditions is that the flowers might kind of bleach out in the afternoon sun. One of my MIPs is in a rather shady spot, and does ok - not as well as the ones in sun (smaller plant, fewer flowers, a bit more BS) but ok. I have a recommendation for your spot - how about Carefree Beauty/Katy Road Pink? I have multiple specimens of this rose in various conditions: full sun, shade, partial shade with major root competition from trees, a too-small container, etc etc etc. Nothing seems to bother this rose - they all bloom well (the one in shade is a bit leggier and blooms a bit less than the others, but still) and are healthy and trouble free. If you are ok with once-bloomers, Constance Spry and Himmelsauge are ones that I grow in shade that do quite well, and I bet they wouldn't mind afternoon sun. Comments (16)Liezel: I've also read some bad reviews about Claire Austin, but the one we planted at Humpty Dumpty House has been our best performing rose this year. It's planted in a very well amended bed, gets underground drip irrigation as well as a hose blasting once in a while, and is spiraled around a pillar. I've only fed it once so far, for lack of time. Unfortunately, most of the roses here get morning shade and blazing afternoon sun, and our summers are very hot and dry. Claire was always blanketed in a dozen or more elegant blooms till early autumn when her blooms got smaller and eventually decreased in number as well. Since blooms decreased on all the other roses in the same garden, I'm guessing that shade was the culprit. With the autumn sun lower in the sky, tall hedges, and overgrown trees, the roses were pretty much in bright shade all day long. We're chipping away at the trees and hedges to bring in a bit of sunshine, and I'm curious to see what happens to the roses next. By the way, another elegant climber that's ecru with the slightest blush of apricot is Wollerton Old Hall, in case you have access to that one and don't need a pure white. Comments (20)I don't know why I've been so resistant to growing Princess Alexandra of Kent and Munstead Wood. By all accounts these are great roses that should do well for me. Instead I keep trying Abraham Darby, whose flowers fry as soon as the sun touches them, and whose flowers frequently open a crayola orange, which I don't like. One day I will learn to grow what does well for me rather than pursuing things that don't work. 3 votes for Pretty Jessica. I've gotta look at that again. mustbnuts: Don't give up on Alnwick Castle yet. I've had mine only two years, so far it seems to be vigorous with great fragrance. The flowers get damaged after a few days in the heat, but cut well, and it keeps growing and putting out flowers in the heat. I hadn't read that Pretty Jessica does well in heat, so one more on my list! Thanks for quenching my desire for Jude. I had a sniff of this in California, and have wanted it since, but the color is wrong for my garden, and it has never looked good at the rose garden here. Eyes for You is supposed to do well in the heat, with the Hulthemia background. I'd like to hear about it. Lynn: I'm surprised that Mary Rose does that well for you. I have Winchester Cathedral, and it does well enough, but the flowers are shrunken and deformed in the heat. I wonder if I should give Mary Rose a try? The outstanding rose for taking heat (almost all day sun) in my garden is Titian. Cori Ann, on other threads, has mentioned how thick petalled roses take heat better, and it is certainly true of Titian. Plus, even in cooler weather it's the longest lasting rose on a shrub by far - around a week. The colour is a little strong for many though! The photos below gives an idea of the colour, but nowhere near capture it. Light red is the best I can come up with. It really isn't pink.
Is anyone else noticing an increase in the intensity of the sun? That's what's frying my roses, more than just heat. Perhaps it's the hole in the Ozone Layer here. I'm not up on it.
Edited: I had a look at Titian earlier, and realised that the inner part of the older petals is a hot pink. I don't know f I'd never looked close enough before, or this is happening because the temperature has increased.
I wrote this post in a hurry. Daisy, it's such a pleasure to see more photos of your garden. It is a miracle.
Lisa your photos are lovely. The Faun is a sweet little bush. I'll have to think about that one. Also Louis Philippe. Evelyn is a stunner, but I've given up on DA's.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoDaisy, I think you are a rose whisperer, because it's uncanny how huge and gorgeous all your roses are, in spite of what you describe as one heat wave after another. Lisa, your picture of Evelyn is breathtaking. I notice your The Faun has more pinkish flowers than mine, which veer toward the apricot. I would love for mine to be more toward the pink side. It's one of my few roses that does well in the hot afternoon sun. My picture makes it look a lot pinker than it is in real life.
Trish, I've noted the increasing intensity of the sun for some years now, and it seems to get a little stronger every year. Even when the air temperature is benign the level of heat in the sun is astonishing, which isn't helped by all the hard surfaces in my garden area. I'm practically nocturnal these days!

I can't believe I forgot Iceberg. It never melts, no matter how hot the sun. I also forgot Annie Laurie McDowell and Pretty Jessica, both being in the hot PM sun.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoBlush Noisette is a continuous bloomer here... including our hottest month of July. This little plant was only 9 months old June 20th 2016. It is about 5' 6" x 6' now. I noted in the image save title that the picture was taken the day after it was 108F/42.2C.
