Would this mess up my compressor?
Comments (13)Thanks MrBill!!! Bama...there is a way to check the capacitor if you have some basic test equipment. If you have at least a cheapie analog Volt, Ohm meter you can do a seat of the pants test. Put the meter into the ohms funtion, connect it to the capacitor, the needle should fly to one side of the scale and then slowly return to the left. Although this won't give you the exact capacitance of the capacitor, it does indicate the capacitor is functioning as a capacitor. It's possible that it is not at full capacitance but I think in this case, you're ok. Your motor should have a label on it or, you should have some paperwork that shows which wire is common and gets connected to one of the terminals that has the power coming to it. The other wire would go on the other terminal of the capacitor, by itself. There is no general color code to follow so you'll need to follow the schematic with the motor....See MoreA/C stopped working at some point today
Comments (5)Sorry for the pictures in the post, I should have just posted the links. That's going to be rough on mobile or dial up users (if they exist still) So I vacuumed the air return and replaced the filter. Left the A/C switch off and the fan "ON" just to let the fan blow air through the fins assuming it was iced up in the attic as well as outside. I went outside at the compressor and hosed off all the ice that I could see and cleaned the unit outside. I waited until about 11pm when I was ready to go to bed and then turned the unit back on and set it for a few degrees higher than normal. It stayed on all night and appears to be working this morning also. I guess it was just dirty filter and lack of airflow causing it....See MoreA/c Compressor running cold and has condensation
Comments (4)It's most likly to be restricted airflow. Cause can range from dirty filter, dirty evap coil, collapsed return to blower not moving suffecent air. Did ambient outdoor tempature in your location drop recently? While waiting for tech to return I suggest raising temp setting to highest point at t-stat and setting fan to ON/CONT. After 6 or more hours set temp for normal operation but leave fan set ON/CONT. Carfully test volume of air flow at the start and each hour or two....See Moreair compressor motor circuit breaker
Comments (12)The thermal overload protector for a motor is a very slow acting thermal circuit breaker. It does not typically have any magnetic trip like the ones in a residential box that are thermal-magnetic and use both methods at the same time. Once it heats up and trips it may take a while to cool off before it will reset, and if you manage to reset it while it is still warm it will trip sooner. Induction motors will pull more current if the voltage to them sags when the motor is loaded. As the voltage sags the motor slows and the current heads upwards. The extra current will increase the losses in the motor and result in overheating. The motors on muchof the imported stuff have no real reserve capacity. The peak horsepower they can deliver is very close to the rated horsepower. This makes them sensative to multiple on-off cycles in a short time, or trying to start under load. You might want to use a dedictated ircuit for the motor, with heavier conductors, and shorten the cord up. Anything more than about 5 feet is asking for extra voltage drop. If the motor fails you should be able to replace it with a better one from Grainger....See Morebijan pahlavan
