The problem is lack of water Period. OK. That seems like a long time to run the sprinkler for. You need to achieve 3/4 to 1" of water no matter how long it takes. Try a different rotor head that will throw more water, or change the nozzle in your current heads if you can. Honestly, running it for 45 minutes drenched the yard! Thats because we just received 3 days of soaking rain. It also doesn't explain why one of my problem areas received more water. If the problem was not enough water, it should be receiving less, right? Your talking about an 1/8" difference. If it would have been 1/2" or more difference then you might have an argument. What makes you think it's not enough water? Because you only applied an average of 3/16" of water. Can it be fungus? Chinch Bugs? No and once again, even if it was chinch bugs, you already treated for them. We have sandy soil in the Tampa Bay area. The problem areas you have are DEAD and are not going to get better over night. The good thing is that S.A. spreads by runners fairly rapdily. You could/should apply some compost to the dead areas to help/speed the process up. I strongly advise you read this whole thread again and follow the advise. By spring/early summer your problems should be much much better.

I recd about 10 bareroots in early April which I soaked and potted up. 9 of them broke dormancy within a month. There was 1 however that did nothing. The canes turned brown. I snipped a few inches off the canes and it was brown inside. Figuring it was a goner I decided I could use the pot for something else. As I grabbed the canes to yank the thing out of the pot, lo and behold there were lots of white feeder roots! I shoved the thing back in the pot, cut the canes down to about 2 inches above the bud union and just let it sit. Amazingly it now has 7 basal breaks coming from the bud union! I was very surprised but you really just ever know what's going on underground! It was a good lesson for me in having patiece with bareroots.

MATURE fig trees certainly can handle hot weather. However, to get a YOUNG in ground tree to grow as rapidly as possible......keep the ground always moist. This will allow a strong root system to develop quickly. After a year or two in the ground they will be much better able to handle dry conditions. I live in zone 9 and do not give my fig trees any fertilizer after the middle of August. This is done to discourage too much tender green growth that may not have enough time to harden off (lignify) before the arrival of cold weather. Fig tree growth that is too green is damaged easily by cold weather. That is likely why your orchard man told you not to fertilize your tree until spring. It also helps harden off your fig tree for the winter if you lessen the amount of water that you give it a month or two before cold weather arrives in your area. Making your tree thirsty for water just before winter will help it survive cold weather. Dan

That is plenty of room. Your soil is most likely too fertile. It causes leaf production over radish growth as you can see in the long skinny one. Much bigger leaf growth. Climate also. They like cool soil and cool nights. Once it heats up they slow way down. Probably harvested too soon. You can try another sowing in late August for a fall crop. (depending where you are). Some mistakes happen when a garden is planted all at once. Some crops love going in as soon as the soil can be worked and don't mind very cold weather.
