Need a wow foyer
Comments (65)Boy, this is certainly not the place to come if you're seeking a consensus! :-) I'm feeling constant buffeting between those who holler "Boring beige! Liven it up or your doomed!" and the other side that screams "Leave it alone, you're making it worse!" Ok, most of you aren't that extreme, but it's a lot all over the map to synthesize. I'm not offended by either camp, and hopefully that's mutual to those of you that express opinions that I seem to ignore. In the end, I have to balance my budget, what I know about the house that doesn't always convey in the photos (things look starker and less colorful in the photos than IRL), and what the competition looks like. The stuff in my price range is mostly empty or sparser than me, or else it's cluttered and dated. You have to go up 100-200K to get the more fully-furnished-and-accessorized looks. My decision is that we're taking a middle road. The sunroom bugged me being so sparse (feels like a forgettable "extra" room on the way to the outdoors), so we sprung for some more furnishings to fill it up and make it instead feel like a cozy destination room to watch the outdoors. I've added some accessories to de-sparsify rooms because they do make a room feel more comfy. I'm minimalist at heart, though, so I can't/won't do the cluttery look. So, I'd still welcome anyone's input and further suggestions. If you can find it within yourselves to trust that I've got a decent sense of space and a good understanding of how dressed up it needs to be to feel good and sell, then come along for the ride. If it would help, then think of this less of a staging thread and more of a decorating-on-a-budget one. A few final notes, responses to the last few posts: -Mirrors on an entry wall are bad feng shui, so I'm avoiding. -Round table in the center is a cool idea, but this foyer is 10x14, so the table would be an obstacle to maneuver around. -Dresser in Jack's room is staying. I don't really want a "country grandeur" look, and this new table is bought, assembled, and staying. And in case anyone's still reading, I added new photos to the "downstairs" thread and would love your feedback. Comments (28)The round table does sound nice to seat 8 if there is enough clearance on all sides, plus I would asume the OP will also have need to put a high chair in the room. We have a rectangular table that seats 6 on a regular basis, though it has a butterfly leaf that when it comes out will seat 8 in a large square similar to pattieem's table. We have used it for parties and when my BIL's family came to stay with us for a few weeks over Christmas. Similar to the round table, I also like how it faciliates conversation. As I had only 6 chairs, I ended up using a bench ottoman I already had for one of the sides. That ended up being the most popular place to sit with the younger kids; but I know it would definitely depend on the chemistry between the children whether or not a bench seat would work or not. One thing I find annoying about my setup is that my kids seldom push in their chairs and I have to go around pushing them in all the time. That would be one advantage of the farm table and bench seating. I usually don't share personal pics, but here are a couple of pics of all the kids over Christmas when we had the leaf out: All eating: Making Xmas goodies:...See MoreOutside Patio Table: Round or Rectangle?
Comments (6)We have a 54" round table. It works well for us, we have 7 chairs easily around the table (bought 6, but one was slightly damaged in shipping so it was replaced). I like round tables as it's easy to see and converse with everyone when seated. Most times it's just the family outside dining in the summer evenings and this works best for us. When we have guests over we have an additional folding picnic table and the kids will often sit there. I do agree, though, to chose what fits best in your space and lifestyle....See MoreRound or Rectangle Table for this space? Images inc.
Comments (7)This is such a personal preference. I would go for the round for several reasons: You already have a lot of squares with the floor and the door mullions so round would break up the boxiness. Plus I'm guessing you have kids (since you're seating 5). With a round one it's easier to include an extra person and it's nice for conversations. It looks like the area gets some through traffic and with a round table there won't be run-ins with the corners. Any lefties in the group? Round also helps them out too!...See MoreUser
