There will probably be other things added, one never knows. There are six families and each bring things with my oldest daughter and

me providing the most. Many things on the list are things we always seem to must have. The birthday cake is for my son in law. His birthday is the 30th.

It looks like we will be going to La Copine just outside Joshua Tree Monument, and/or Crossroads Cafe in the town of Joshua Tree. We'll have to check hours once we get there. We'll probably go to Crossroads Cafe for lunch and La Copine for dinner. La Copine was highly recommended by a friend of mine, and she also told me to stop by the orchid nursery that is just a few blocks away from the Integraton, which we might also visit.

I'll probably end up having a sandwich or quesadilla for lunch and then a regular dinner at La Copine, providing they will be open on Thanksgiving. There is also a Thai restaurant in Joshua Tree, as well as a few other restaurants, and so we should be okay for food there. Often we do not get very good food during road trips, but I think La Copine should be an exception.

I'm hosting a Friends and Family Thanksgiving this year. We went ketogenic earlier this year, so most of my recipes will be ultra-low carb.

(My family will arrive with dishes, too.)

GREEN BEAN
CASSEROLE Make Ahead a day or so and then refrigerate reheat slowly

This is the only one my family loves to eat. I have to make
it every Thanksgiving. I have also made only half of this recipe.

3 cans Blue Lake cut green beans, drained (I use Del Monte Blue Lake whole green
beans)

1 10-oz jar sliced mushrooms, drained

1 large onion, chopped

1/2 cup butter

1/4 cup flour

1 cup whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

3/4 pound shredded cheddar cheese (I use 3 large handfuls)

1 teaspoons soy sauce

1 teaspoon MSG, optional (I use Accent)

1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/8 teaspoon Tabasco sauce (I use about 4-5 shakes out of
the bottle)

1 8-oz can water chestnuts, drained and chopped (I use 4-oz)

Put drained beans a baking dish. Place chopped water
chestnuts on top of beans. Sauté mushrooms and onion in 1/2 cup butter. Add
flour and mix thoroughly. Add black pepper and MSG. Measure milk and cream into
2 cup measuring cup; add soy sauce, MSG, Worcestershire sauce, and Tabasco
sauce to milk; stir. Pour milk into flour mixture and stir thoroughly. Add
cheese and stir to distribute. Pour over green beans in baking dish. Bake at
350 for 30 minutes. You can actually cook at a lower temperature for a longer
period of time or vice versa; just watch and do not let get real brown.

You can also top with a mixture of bread or cracker crumbs
and butter before baking. I just don't particularly care for it that way,
because the gold from the cheese is so pretty. This is one of those dishes you
can also prepare the day before, then just stick in oven before serving. I
think it is actually better the second day.

LOL, Ellen. Although my oldest daughter is celiac and lactose intolerant, and my mother is allergic to lemons and my youngest daughter had a stroke at age 27 and is supposed to eat heart healthy and low fat and sodium, I'll still manage to feed us all. (grin)

beth09, oops. It should say Roasted Broccoli and then the link. We're having all three. The roasted Brussels sprouts and radishes are so easy peasey no recipe is needed.

You want the Brussels sprouts and radishes to be similarly sized. I usually halve or quarter them, usually halved, but it really depends on the size of them. Cooked radishes are shockingly like potatoes, but they are low carb. Once cooked they lose their spiciness.

Roasting vegetables: mix vegetables in a bowl with olive oil and garlic powder - can also add red pepper flakes. Pour onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Add fresh cracked pepper and sea salt. Roast at 400*F for ~ 35 minutes.

Cheryl Hewitt, I really like cooked radishes, but I never really thought they were like potatoes, I always compared them to turnips (which I find very mild when roasted). Now I'm going to have to make them soon just to compare.

annie1992, they aren't a deadringer for potatoes, but they make a great substitute. They work well as a hash, with a roast, fried, roasted, etc.

Thanks, Cheryl. I thought maybe it was the texture that threw me off. Not that it matters, I like radishes, I like turnips, I like potatoes, I like them all!
