Thoughts on Dogs
Comments (27)Hi All, Your "Rascal" sounds pretty smart, Janie. Your description of his smiley-faced tactics made me laugh. And yes, I did get a sweet dog. I got my new dog on April 19th and new rabbits on April 17th, and between the rabbits and the dog, plus going back to work after being on vacation, and starting obedience training, I've not had much time to post here. The new dog is named Pearl. (I didn't have the heart to change her name since she'd already been through many changes.) She is a 2-1/2 to 3 y/o short-haired merle Australian Shepherd mix who looks very much like a farm dog with a bobbed tail. She is a LOVING dog who wants to be in your lap even though she weighs 40 lbs. She was originally at the local city shelter where, from my understanding, she was given up along with 8 puppies or maybe she was pregnant when they gave her up. The puppies, of course, went first and then a dog rescue group took Pearl.--I'm not sure if she was on the shelter's euthansia list or not. According to the rescue group, Pearl really mourned her puppies and consequently "adopted" a young three month old rescued puppy as her own. The rescue group believed Pearl was abused, and this may be the case because sometimes she will just cower when you approach her as if she expects you to beat her. On the other hand, Pearl is FULL of life. She practically dances when I let her out of her crate. (She is in her crate for 4 hours at a time when I'm at work. I come home for lunch.) Pearl's also filled with energy and wants to garden, but she hasn't figured out what she wants to plant yet. (I've put up a low wire fence around my blackberries to protect them, and she's decided to dig elsewhere.) I decided after having her a week that she would benefit tremendously from obedience classes. She's the kind of dog who needs something to do. (I didn't realize this about the Aussie breed.) Anyway, she is responsive to commands and just in the month I've had her, she's learned to sit, lie down, wait for her food, and "settle," which means to lie on her side. This week, we're working on the commands of "stay" and walking on a leash without pulling you down the street. Finally, Pearl's a little possessive when it comes to sharing me with my older dog, so I find time when Pearl is occuppied elsewhere to give some one-on-one to my older dog. They play together though and the older dog, Scallywag, tolerates Pearl. All in all, I think Pearl is a good addition to this house....See MoreBull's Balls
Comments (11)Aha, my source for Ste. Colombe appears. LOL Gary, I'm doing my darndest to get the newer described varieties out there and L knows that as well. I send the best of what I grow each year to several seed sites where I know the owners and trust them and I also list them in the SSE YEarbook. There are quite a few seed site owners who get their starts from the YEarbook so that's another way that new varieties get out there. And I also distribute them in that free seed offer that I make elsewhere. No, I didn't think Tania would have Ste. Colombe described yet. I know she's behind on some recent SSE Yearbook varieties as well as scanning seed sites to post where she indicates seed sources. And yes, Ste. Colombe is a great variety. And I see by looking in my notebook near me that this past Spring I sent Ste. Colombe to two SSE members who are very good friends who have huge listings as well as to Glenn at Sandhill and didn't have enough seeds to send elsewhere b'c I had few seeds and they went to those SSE members who requested them from my listing. I didn't have enough seeds to offer in my seed offer. But I normally send to Sandhill, Gleckler's, sometimes to Mike at Victory Seeds but he's way behind on trialing as it is, sometimes to Marianne Jones and usually to Linda at Tomato Growers Supply but this past Spring when we talked she said she too was very behind on trialing and had only trialed one variety from the year before, that was Orange Minsk, which she loved so I know that one will appear in a year or two and is already available at other sites. So I won't be sending anything to her until later this Fall. As it is, the seed production for ALL of my varieties is now done by others, actually four folks this year, bless them, and seed production for Ste. Columbe is being done in KY and I haven't had any feedback lately. All the others are being done by 3 folks in NC. So never fear, I'll distribute stuff as fast as I can and have been doing so. The fact is that I get more feedback from my seed offer than I do from SSE members who get seeds from me so in a week or two I'll be putting up a feedback thread elsewhere to see how some of the new varieties did for those folks. Yes, L, you get Meme Beauce, but you have to remind me and if you don't have enough Rose d'Eauze seeds let me know as well. But Gary was able to germinate his. ( smile) Gary, I didn't review that thread about Couilles so it could well be that it was renamed in Belgium, not France; that's the French speaking part of Belgium. Comments (17)Many unfortunate dogs and puppies registered with AKC can be found on Craig's List. Craig's List does not breed dogs, nor do those who advertise an AKC pup on Craig's List. All of these dogs came from a litter bred by an AKC breeder, and somehow ended up in the hands of an irresponsible owner, because no responsible owner would re-home a dog via Craig's List. The AKC is a registry and it is not their job to create or evaluate breeding programs. The parent clubs of each of the 220+ AKC breeds are responsible for writing and maintaining the breed standards, and individual AKC breeders are responsible for their breeding programs and genetic testing. AKC's responsibilities do extend to the conditions in which dogs registered with them are kept. Many of the highly publicized busts of puppymills have occurred as results of investigations by the AKC. Typically PETA, HSUS, and other animal rights groups expropriate the media spotlight, but it has often been AKC who began investigations and legal proceedings. This is yet another reason why few, if any, puppymills today register their dogs with AKC. If you don't believe me, go into any pet store and ask to see the paperwork. You will find their puppies are registered with a bogus registry such as Continental Kennel Club or American Purebred Registry....See Morecraig list find

I love the patina of vintage things also. Just measure carefully where you'd like to put it, and if it'll fit well, call the guy and ask to go see it. I wouldn't offer less until I saw it in person. His ad doesn't say 'best offer', but he does say it needs to go as he's moving. Look for labels on the piece to see if it's a maker of quality furniture. If you love it when you see it, since it does look to be in such good condition, you might offer $500. Do you have a way to get it home? That may cost to rent a truck or pay someone to deliver it for you, and that may be a haggling point on the price....See Moremamapinky0
