Hardiness Zone: 8a Michelle from Dallas, TX Answer: Michelle, Growing vegetables on your patio certainly doesn't need to be expensive. The lack of sunlight, however, could prove to be a problem. For successful growth, most vegetables will need a minimum of 5 hours of direct sunlight a day. Some will need even more. "Leafy" vegetables (cabbage, lettuce) will tolerate the least amount of light, but vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers and carrots will need more sun. You'll have to experiment to see what grows best. To maximize the light you have, use strategically placed shiny materials and light colored rocks around your containers to reflect light back onto the plants. The most inexpensive way to start vegetables is from seed. Varieties labeled "patio, bush, or dwarf" are often bred specifically for container gardening. Saving seeds from year to year will cut down on expenses even further, but you'll need to start with heirloom seeds and avoid hybrids if you want offspring true to the parent plants. Just about anything that can hold a soil can be fashioned into a container: pails, trashcans, dishpans, plastic detergent or cat litter containers (cut down), wooden or wicker baskets, or even old leather or rubber boots. I like containers made from plastic materials, even though they tend to deteriorate over time with repeated sun exposure. They don't dry out as fast a terra cotta, transfer heat or rust like metal, and you can usually recycle them when you're done using them. If you use plastic containers, try not to spend much on them. Crops with shallow roots, like radishes, beets and onions, will grow just fine in old cake pans. Provide cages or trellises for climbers like beans, peas and cucumbers to save space, or plant them in hanging baskets and let their vines trail downward. If you don't have anything suitable on hand, shop around at flea markets, rummage sales or dollar stores. Make sure your containers have adequate drainage holes on the bottom. In regards to a growing medium, plan on using a very light soil or a soil-less mix-something that will drain rapidly, yet hold nutrients and keep the plant's roots consistently moist. Been MIA since last month when we moved in the end of April. We had just moved in and had out of town family visitors who had planned on coming before we were finished. (We thought we would have been in earlier) Plus, we were dealing with a lot of punch list items. Builder was still trying to finish cabinets before we got into the house. So had to deal with no doors or glass in cabinets at first. Finally got finished with the electrician. Now all the fans and exterior lights work. The painter still has some work to do on the exterior and some more interior touch ups. Our screened porch finally was finished this past week before we got eaten alive by the skeeters. We have also had a number of deliveries for furniture we ordered from various places. And we adopted a new kitten who was very sick the last week and is finally getting back to normal. So we have had our hands full until now. Here are some pictures taken by a professional photographer of the front and back of the house a couple days after we moved in. ewininger90 The exception is for: Group U; Group R-3; and within dwelling units in Group R-2. It looks to me that a home fits within Group R-2. See pp, 3 and 4 here for definition of Occupancy Groups. If it were me, I'd get the absolute word in writing from your local municipality's building permit office. (You should be able to do that without giving out your address.) With that in hand, the contractor has no excuse should you need to go further. I don't know how effective the state consumer affairs office is. I can only speculate that they are more interested in outright fraud and non-performance rather than a Code violation. It would be instructive to see how the poster Caroline Hamilton, above, got satisfaction.

It looks fine to me. I've never fallen down stairs nor has DH, but lives change and we do have older people in ours now who could find going up those stairs difficult. Someone with a weaker left hip or knee would very much appreciate a right hand friendly railing. Please don't get hung up on minor cosmetic details with your build, keep function in mind too.... My house was built by a doctor for his retirement home. It has some features I probably would not have paid for, but have come to appreciate. Wide hallways/doorways, curb less showers, no stairs from attached garage to inside, and a paved sidewalk that encircles the entire house under a deep overhang. I find I like it that I can be outside in the rain and not get my shoes wet or dirty ;) And, we did have a drop-in guest in a wheelchair last week, it was nice to be able to accommodate him without calling undo attention to his disability, or have to visit with him in the driveway (in December).
