Countertop microwaves - are there any that DON'T suck?
Comments (24)It is easy to understand the OP view as I have just spent the past 10 days searching and researching for a good countertop microwave. Take into consideration that some of those showing 3 stars or better, may not meet certain criteria for the poster. In my case it was size....could not be more than appox. 20 in. Wide nor 16" deep. This eliminated a lot with decent ratings. I am replacing a 30 yr. old Sanyo that still works great but I am refreshing my kitchen and wanted new (but did not need new). CR also rated a Sanyo highly so my original thought was to get another. Wrong! They are discontinued because Panasonic bought Sanyo. Finally one hit my hot button....a Magic Chef 1.1 cu ft. with the correct dimensions and a door pull, which I preferred over a finicky push button. Price point was much lower than other retailers....$84 plus free shipping..I figured what did I have to lose. So I agree with the other posters when they say, consider them disposable and do not pay too much. I might add that the reviews on this model were excellent plus, when I offered my 30 yr. old working Sanyo on freecycle.com, two requests were from people who owned newer Panasonics which had died....See MoreSectional Sofas...a good idea? or don't go there?
Comments (39)Just to update, we finally ordered a sectional from Century. It is L shaped with a loveseat on one wall and a sofa length on the other. The good thing is that it is 43" deep so it should be very comfortable to lay on. We chose a chenille type fabric in a greenish tone. We started the room's decor off by picking 2 oriental rugs and pulling colors from that. The sofa comes with 7 throw pillows, so I chose 2 different fabrics for 4 of those. We'll see if it works or not when it comes in! On another note, once we started to choose decor, we realized the color on the walls was pukey and we had to get the painters back to change from blue to brown. I'm so glad we did that. It really warms up a basement room with no windows. The lighting is what made color selection so tricky. Also in there, we got a leather recliner from Hancock & Moore. And the really neat looking Wisteria Barn door coffee table. Funny thing is that when it arrived, it really did smell like a...barn door! Fortunately that smell has disapated....See MoreLooking for the best value manufacturers for budget/mid-priced sofa.
Comments (10)Crate and Barrel carries some Lee Industries sofas, which I've found to be well made. I believe the annual C+B 15 percent off upholstery sale is currently on. Designer Rosa Beltran has a new-ish store in Los Angeles, Clad Home, and sells semi/custom sofas for what seem like reasonable prices. Here are some of her blog posts on her furniture: here, and here. If I lived in the U.S. I'd love to try one of her sofas. This sort of dovetails with the recent threads on Ikea and sad, bad, cheap furnishings. Living where I do in Canada, six hours north of the U.S. border and hours from the nearest big city, my sofa choices are exceedingly limited. Even for Crate and Barrel, we had to have it shipped to friends in the city, because we live outside the urban delivery area, and then pick it up on our own; fortunately, we live in a part of North America where people tend to drive trucks and own trailers. Ideally I would have had my old Altman's sofa reupholstered, but I couldn't find an upholsterer I could trust AND afford....See MoreDon't buy it! Please Don't
Comments (39)Eh, bins are finally coming into my house. Didn't have the urge to organize before purging as there was so much crap. I did the work, my house has half the number of storage furniture and drawers it did before I started. Now I'm making things easier to access and bins and baskets are helpful. I can reach the front edge of a 6.5' shelf and see to the back of the bottom shelves of my kitchen cabinets. Without bins stuff got lost. Christmas is finally in 6 small bins for safety after living in 3 heavy tattered boxes for years. Without bins the comforter and blankets I have to keep so my guests don't whine about being cold are a horrible mess on the linen closet shelf. I do shop the stash. Any box, basket or jar in reasonably good shape is kept and I use them rather than buy new stuff if possible. And my donation box is full. Time to get that stuff out of the house....See MoreEmily Jowers
