Must have kitchen gadgets...
Comments (48)Wow, more activity over on this side than I expected. Yeah, I saw that guy's spam all over the place. On the plus side though, his spam posting did dredge up some interesting old posts I would never have seen otherwise. I got an ice cream machine for my birthday. I love it. There's something nice about making your own ice cream, with fresh ingredients, and customized to your tastes. I made a Meyer lemon sorbet that was especially good, and extremely simple. Was not impressed by the bread machine. Bread machine bread just doesn't turn out that great to me. It doesn't get kneaded well enough, in my opinion, so you often end up with crumbly bread because the gluten didn't develop well enough. Which in turn means that it isn't able to develop enough structure to properly hold all those air bubbles that yeast develops. Hence, crumbly or dense bread. In a weird shape, no less. But hey, I do think an espresso machine is a fabulous idea. Haven't made it that far though. I'm too broke anyway....See Morebought a new kitchen gadget, but don't know how to use it!
Comments (17)Don't throw it away! If you don't want it box it up and send it to Cathy. She collects funny kitchen gadgets. My father taught me to make huge spaetzle noodles. Dumpling he called them. A dozen eggs cracked into a bowl, flour until it is fairly stiff dough, and a half a handful of parsley. Dropped from a spoon into a pot of boiling water. Tip.. wet the spoon in a cup of water bewteen each spoonful of dough so it won't stick... push off into the water with your finger. I've also seen my father roll this dough out on a floured cutting board and cut it into strips for stroganoff noodles. One of my variations that is very delicious is to substitute spinach flour. They take to most any gravy and can be added to soups (don't cook them in the soup). My youngest sister likes them buttered with parmeasan cheese. My father often cooked a chicken, made gravy, and these spaetzle noodles to go with the gravy. After awhile he started leaving the chicken on the stove because everyone ate spaetzle and gravy until they were full. Give them a try Bobby. They are easy to make and difficult to get wrong. They float when cooked and you can even overcook them some without making them bad. They keep in the fridge and reheat perfectly in a microwave. : ) lyra...See MoreKitchen Small Appliances/Gadgets
Comments (4)I think this is an individual question. Ask yourself these questions: - How often will I use this? Will I use it often enough to justify it? - Can any of my small appliances do double-duty? - Do I have the storage space for this item? Microwave Honestly, I could do without my microwave. I wish I had a big enough pantry that I could have a small one tucked away for the occasional bag of popcorn, etc. Mine's not "earning its space on the counter". toaster, We don't toast often, so we got rid of ours ... we toast in the oven or with the Air Fryer, which are inferior choices, but since I make toast less than once a month, I'll live with it. coffee pot, My husband drinks coffee; no one else in the house does. I'd like to say our Keurig isn't "earning its space", but he loves coffee, so I'd never get rid of it. food processor, mini chopper We use these constantly. walffle maker, We have a bitty-model and use it fairly often. blender, Don't own one. crock pot, I have two crock pots (one very small, one medium-large) and one Insta-pot (large). If I could only have one, I'd want to go with the Insta-pot because it can act as a pressure cooker OR a crock pot. pots and pans, Go through your pots and pans and see which ones you use constantly ... and which ones are rarely used. Get the best set you can find and take good care of them. garlic press, milk frother Don't have these. No desire to own them. panini presses/sandwich makers I have a Cruisinart Griddler, which I love, but it honestly doesn't get all that much use. I do love that it can "open up flat" and act as a pancake griddle. Aerogarden, Don't know what that is. personal blenders (such as Nutribullet or Ninja), Had one. Gave it to Goodwill. Air fryers, We like our Air Fryer. Unlike the oven, it doesn't require pre-heating, so we can cook something small like a pot pie or a French bread pizza very quickly. It's great for cooking anything in small quantities. immersion blenders We do enjoy homemade soup, and the immersion blender is like magic. Give me a good chef's knife and I'm happy. Love a good knife. Additional thoughts: - Things I've had /got rid of: Juicer, Bread Maker, Rotisserie - I have a small ice cream maker, and I should get rid of it. - I have a dehydrator, which my husband uses to make jerky. It gets enough use to justify keeping it. - I have a rice cooker, which I love. Sure, I can make rice on the stove, but I don't have to watch this. It can cook other things too. - One thing you didn't mention is a stand mixer. I love-love-love-love-love my Kitchen Aid. It's well over 20 years old and works just like it did the day I took it out of the box. Kitchen Aid makes a bunch of accessories; I have a sausage grinder and zoodler. It makes sense to have a Kitchen Aid + accessories ... rather than one-shot items....See MoreKitchen Small appliances/Gadgets
Comments (22)I love my small IP and AF. use AF the most - almost daily. the IP not as often but then I don't cook much anymore. what i look for is if it'll make things easier for me or safer. i think i only used my big oven once last yr. I only use 1 burner on it a few times a month. I removed the other coils several yrs ago. a gadget i have and really like is a veggie peeler that does the normal peel on one side but flip it over and i get shavings on a carrot that i can then line up and with a few knife chops have little shaving bits to sprinkle on a salad, into potato / mac salad or in my dogs food. she loves carrots. that might be a curtis Stone product. I do have in my A cart a silicone tray to freeze food in 1/2 cp portions. it has 8 divsions and I think and will be good to freeze meal portions for me - soup, rice, refried beans, salsa, broth etc. It's available in larger portion sizes....See MoreRelated Professionals
