Best of the First-Time Bloomers
Comments (17)Here are some of the runners up for the Top 10. LAVENDER REFLECTIONS - beautiful flowers and beautiful 4-way branching with 23 buds on the only scape I had. MAGNIFICENT DAD - This one took three years to bloom, but the flower was gorgeous. Bud count of 14. ICE CREAM EMPEROR - I got this Trimmer intro in spring a year ago, but the scapes had been cut off and it did not bloom then. I liked the looks of this near white. Bud count was low, but it's still in a pot. NO BOYS ALLOWED - Great color and form on this Davisson UF! WINTER TREASURE impressed me as being very white. It does have some pink blush in the sepals, but the petals are whiter than anything else I grow. Debra...See MoreMy first bloomer, and I am as pleased as can be
Comments (5)Hi Bill, I agree, names did not mean much to me at first. I still don't get too fussy about them. It just happens that ShihtzuSu and I have been having a discussion about O Manitoba on other threads. So this is an opportunity for Su to see what it looks like. It happens to be one of my favorites. I agree that trying to i.d. plants is not something I especially focused on when I first started growing. But now that I belong to a club, they do want to know what it is I am giving them. Often, I tell them to grow it out then shoot me a picture. I know what I own, so I can tell them. As for store-bought O's, I don't worry too much about their names, because those are mostly kept for fun and to share with friends who crave a violet. Or for club sales. The O's I keep for myself are distinctive and easy to i.d. because one of a kind. As I do more research and develop more interest in the hobby, I get more interested in the names because it indicates something about the genetics. At a time, there are only certain ones available at retail or with growers. While the sheer quantity of hybrids is often cited as a statistic, in reality, only certain ones are available at present. Joanne...See MoreSome first time bloomers!
Comments (3)Bintulu Borneo first bloom in mid July. Loved all the nectar. Didn't have a fragrance this time, but heard it is fragrant. Mathilde - first bloom at the end of June. A nonstop grower and one of my favorite blooms. Night scent like lilies that turns rank after the first couple nights....See MoreFavorite first time bloomers this season
Comments (46)So hard to pick 3, but here goes #1 must be Bengali, I got 2 fans last fall, each fan bloomed, every bloom absolutely perfect, at least to my eyes. I could go out at 6 a.m. and the bloom be open and looking so nice. In person, the bloom is darker than my camera shows Claudine's Charm would be #2. I could have wished for more blooms, but the ones it had were beauties Jerry Hyatt arrived this spring, so I was pleased that it bloomed. It didn't have a lot of blooms, but I was so impressed...See Moresherrygirl zone5 N il
