Stymied on unbalanced focal point wall with fireplace... need ideas.
I'm (ever so) slowly decorating our living room and having challenges with the wall that is the focal point so asking for some help.
Looking for ideas or comments to solve 3 things:
1. Ideas to bring balance to the fireplace wall on the right side (without putting in a window. :) )
2. Either reduce the visual impact of the fireplace** or make it more contemporary. I'll be putting in a contemporary fireplace insert and either replacing or covering brick arch when I do it.
- What about painting wall and brick the same color (haven't settled on any colors yet)?
- What about tiling or putting engineered stone over brick or over the whole wall? See attached pic for sample.
- Other thoughts?
3. Ideas to fill that void between the right wall and the chair?
Sorry for the Halloween decorations. My kids are great at putting them up but lousy at taking them down. Oh well.

6 years agoThanks for the feedback Patricia. There won't be any TV in the room. FYI - that picture is up a large step so it is a little lower then eye height. Here is a mock up in MS Paint based on your feedback. Any one have feedback or alternatives to stacked stone?

We realized we have a 24" deep Shaker armoire/hutch (closed upper and lower cabinet) that we will probably need to put in the room. Now it's in the dining room, but is not a great match, so any suggestions on how to use would be helpful. I'm thinking on wall right of sofa towards window with chair in front or left side of sofa toward French doors. The door could still be open and sit against wall. I think it is two large to have on stair wall as I should keep it closed as it holds lots of dishes, but I would also lose a great place for a painting. Your thoughts? Comments (25)Yes those wonderful mounts work well but not for us because we still need the TV to be at eye level and the mounts can't do that. It would have to be pulled into position so it would be in front of the fireplace to get it where we need it to be in order to watch it pain free. Plus over heating the TV and almost frying it was a big problem. Regardless of what went wrong for us folks need to do what ever works best for them. Whether it is to mount it over the fireplace or on another wall. This room does present a complex problem for seating. Comments (7)You need a rug, for sure. I like this one because it has the black, white, gray of the room, plus a hint of the warm floor stain. Also, notice the size of the rug in the inspiration room photo. Suggest a camel tone leather sectional. Actually, I like all of these pieces for your room from Burrow. A wall with paneling, wallpaper or a contrasting paint color is a focal point. A grouping of photos, artwork, a bold rug, even the TV can be a focal point. A room doesn't need to have just one; however, more that three focal points can be visual clutter. Your room's natural focal point is the picture window. You could further define the focal point with a tree or plant that fills the space like THIS. Regardless of whether there is an obvious focal point, I like to repeat color across the room. Do you have favorite artwork? Try to find drapes, throw pillows and a rug that repeats the main color(s). Is there a prominent color in a room visible from this one? Repeat that color in this room. Here is a Houzz Article on this subject. While furniture is often placed to focus on a focal point, it doesn't have to be. It makes no sense to face all the furniture towards the picture window if you are also putting a TV in the room. 6 years agoLarge tiles are a clean, very contemporary look.
The second picture, with the shelves down the sides with sculptural pieces and large vases would fill the void next to the fireplace. I wouldn't extend the hearth, just add large vases to the floor. I think roman shades would finish off the windows. Just something clean and fixed.
And I know you didn't ask but I'd love to see some pillows like these on your sofa.
