No, I've never done it. I've only had a house with adequate outdoor outlets for the last 5 years, invested in some nice LED holiday lighting but nothing too dramatic. What I do have is on dusk/dawn timers, makes it easy.

Actually they do major calculations on wattages and extension cords going to almost every outlet in and out of the house. It takes so much voltage they can’t even run the TV inside. A computer, server and numerous speakers take electric too. Expensive & complicated. Blows my mind!!

When I see something like this, it always reminds me of Chevy Chase's Christmas Vacation movie, where he just adds more and more strings of lights and animated figures, then blows out the power to the entire neighborhood when he turns it on!!

IMO, a bit too much over the top but to each his own.

To me, many people go irrationally overboard for various holidays and occasions. This is just one way of many.

Hate those blow up decorations and the strobe lights that came out a couple of years ago. so tacky!

Looks like the Griswald's house! LOL!! We line the eaves of our house with white icicle lights, and put while lights in 3 trees in the front yard. That's it.

No, we have never done that. Had a brother in law that did similar things. He had crowds of people drive by. I sure would not want that.

Not for me--and I don't think I would want to live on their block, but I admire the commitment, effort and goal. I prefer this to totally dark yards.

Waaaaay too much. Would never happen in my neighborhood, because I don't think any of our 40s/50s era houses would have that much electricity.

NOT my style! And I sure would hate to live on the same street - all those bright lights and all that traffic! Yikes!

The exuberance of the display is rather charming in its own way. It would not happen at my house, though.

I love stuff like that. But for me, all I have right now is a 20 foot tall inflatable snowman that SO bought me last year. I love it,and have my eye on an equally large penguin to join him. I like the inflatables. Plug em in,stake em down, done. The people who make them come up with some cute stuff too.

i went to college in the Pocono mountains of NE PA. there was a man who had lines of cars going past his house every night from right after Thanksgiving. he had great lawn decorations and lights, BUT he looked like Santa... big white beard, the red suit, whole nine yards. it was like a drive-thru visit with Santa.

one year, my sister wanted to go out and steal all of the baby Jesus' we could find and put them on our Aunt's front yard. OH, and we were NOT teenagers at the time!!

Our street goes all out every year to win the community spirit award. We all chip in to rent a lift. The first year we all had the same strings of lights on our roofs and across the street linking to neighbors' houses. The lights that ran across the street had a wreath or whatever as a center decoration over the street. It required a lot of work, but a few of our newer neighbors had done similar designs in their previous neighborhoods and bought computer programs that synchronized the lights to the piped music. Two neighbors have bought every kind of decoration possible and put them up in their yards and on the front of the house and roof. We are more simple in putting lights along the shrubs, the front door and garage doors in addition to the uniform string along the roof that one of the younger guys hangs for us oldsters. The neighbors worry about us!

I love a roof line bordered with a simple string of old fashioned colored lights. LED lights look horrid to my eye. Flashing lights and chasers hurt my brain.

When my kids grew up there was a street called Santa Claus Lane. All the houses would decorate and charge each car a couple dollars to drive through. We took the kids every year. Of course the “show” was nothing like today as they didn’t have computers or programs for that. But it was still beautiful.

Some one near us had a lengthy loop driveway, and they would decorate the woods along their driveway, and people would come by every evening and slowly loop around the driveway looking at all of the displays. At times there would be a little bit of a traffic jam on the two-lane country road as people waited their turn.

The people had affixed a wooden box to a tree for donations to defray the cost for electric and whatever new decorations they had bought. But one night a few years ago some grinchy idiot came through, destroyed the donation box and took the little bit of money that was in it. The rest of that season they roped off their driveway and put up a keep out sign, and as far as I am aware they haven't set up their display since.

Seems there's a Grinch in every neighbourhood ...

... well, in a lot of 'em, anyway.

And they do damage to the spirit of generosity of quite a few others.
