Anyone have Zline or Zephyr or Best Range Hoods?
Comments (11)The issue here is whether the existing hood has enough flow rate at the pressure drop of the recirculation kit to get adequate containment of the the smoke/grease plumes that are captured within the hood overhang. Ideally, one would want the fan curve for the hood blower and a pressure loss vs. flow rate curve for the recirculation kit to find the point of curve intersection. Lacking those, the blowers with the higher rating should be used along with whatever recirculation kit seems to have the most "stuff" intercepting grease, odor, and moisture. It must be appreciated that neither mesh filters or baffles (or VaH magic lung squirrel cage expulsion) remove all the grease vapor particulates, and when the passed particulates are to be directed back into the room instead of outside, multiple layers of filtration are needed. (See figure.) These additional filters further increase the pressure loss and hence reduce the flow rate. At some point, the system cannot contain rising hot plumes above some velocity, and this causes spillage into the room of unfiltered effluent. Low cost recirculating kits are unlikely to have much filtration. This is the reason why the VaH ARS is significantly expensive over the normal VaH pricing -- better filtration. In my memory, only the ARS has been reported on here by an owner. A search may find others. Also, if Amazon sells any of these candidate hoods with recirculation kits, there may be reviews available. It may be very difficult to find a review containing data on efficiency of filtering. What is required may be a matter of taste (or smell). (The figure below shows just how limited even pro baffle filters are. Their true purpose is to collect grease particulates large enough to condense on the ducting, hoping the rest are expelled outside. That there is still some condensation is the reason why commercial kitchen exhaust ducts have to be cleaned and inspected once a year.) [Click to enlarge.]...See MoreSmeg Portofino Range??
Comments (8)The real issue that people run into is service of these machines. That includes any mfg, big or small. Its all great until they break and then that's the problem. that is what Zline customers seem to be saying in that posting. Find a local dealer that sells it and then see if they service what they sell. If it is dumped off to a separate service organization, call them and speak to someone who can tell you if they like them or not, if they see them often and what do they think. That means talking to the service manager, not the person that answers the phone. It is also a myth that any service person can fix anything - that is not true. Every mfg has a different way of designing hardware and software. That takes time to learn. If it is frustrating to the service dept, they just won't fix it well, if at all ask Smeg for the local dealer and then ask that dealer about service. Its the only way to do it...See MoreHas anyone used 2 Zline range 28.5" inserts side by side?
Comments (3)Follow-up for those looking at two 30" side by side ranges: Pro Line Range stated that yes I can use two inserts which ironically they are all 28" not 30". Wish their inserts were at least 29" wide to have 58" over the cooktop. ProLine Range Store stated two inserts will work safely. Their website shows a 28" range insert that provides 900 CFM, which would work perfectly since 1800 CFM exceeds what I need. What sucks is that they are back-ordered for at least 3 months. I spoke with Appliance Leaders 2033 American Avenue, Hayward, CA 94545, US (510) 876-5626. Sean explained that Vent-a-Hood is the ideal but that is super pricey. Since we are becoming house poor, he said that two of the ZLine 28.5" inserts will work fine w/o voiding any warranty since I set-up the electrical for two units and I have two exhaust holes. At least I will get 57" using two ZLine inserts too. My research shows NO 60" ZLine range hoods or inserts exceed 1200CFM, which is actually quite stupid (IMO) & really poor marketing by Zline. The Zline has lifetime and 3yr on the motor itself which is very reasonable for the price point. More people are creating outdoor kitchens &/ or indoor luxury, Kosher, "chef" kitchens etc. I see more people are using 48" plus wide gas ranges or two 30" gas ranges side by side. These kitchens need over 1200 CFM especially for outdoor kitchens. Also a reminder: you really need a window near/ next to your gas ranges or cooktop to crack open when you use your gas cooktop for safety. The cracked window allows ventilation of fresh air into the kitchen and helps exhaust out the fumes, Carbon Monoxide, and smells through the hood exhaust from your gas cooktop....See MoreZLINE gas range recall
