How much lip around drop in tub?

I would like to get a drop in tub because I found one I like that it is affordable and has a deeper water level. And I like the look of building the box under it vs acrylic tub side. The tub will be surrounded by walls on 3 sides, but since we are building the 3rd wall, we can make the space bigger to fit a lip around the tub, but that will be a closet wall, so would not like to take too much away from what will be the closet. We would like to deck mount the faucet on the lip because the only convenient wall to mount it on is where I would prefer be the side where your head goes in the tub. How much lip do I need to be able to mount a faucet? Also I want to be able to clean it easily, so I need space for that. I plan to tile the lip and then tile up the wall a short ways. Would a 3 inch lip on all sides be big enough?

I'm not certain of your nomenclature, so I'll try to clarify first? I think when you're writing "lip" you're referring to the tub deck and not the rim of the tub.

If by "lip" you indeed mean tub deck...the flat surface surrounding the tub that the tub rim will sit upon...and you're mounting the faucet on the tub deck?

You'll need to reconcile the "reach" of the faucet with the width of the rim of the tub so that water easily clears the rim of the tub and flows into the tub. Remember that the escutcheons that sleeve over the hot and cold risers will require the riser holes to be a certain distance from the rim of the tub so the escutcheons can sit flat on the surface of the tub deck.

Plus you'll need to reconcile the "depth" of the faucet, including the hand held head when the hand held is hung on the cradle...so that the hand held head doesn't knock the wall when you hang it up.

I'd recommend you get the spec sheets for the tub and faucet you are using. With those in hand, you can make sure that the reach of the faucet is great enough so that water clears the tub rim for where you want to locate the faucet. The spec sheet for the faucet should include a depth measurement of the faucet itself, so that you can make the deck wide enough so the you have clearance for the faucet, as well as making it easy to remove and replace the hand held from the faucet cradle without knocking the hand held against the wall behind the faucet.

Yes I do mean the tub deck when I say lip around the tub...just didn't find the right words when typing the post. I am thinking that if I can mount the faucet on the deck I would do it at the drain end of the tub, but on the front long side instead of the short side where normal faucets are if it is possible. Like this:

It's a matter or personal preference, you can do either. But it can sometimes dictated by how much wall space you have or the tub style that you have selected to install. If using a vertical bullnose to contain the subway, most people will take the bullnose and just use that down the outside edge of the tub.

I think you "can" but it will look pretty squished/cramped. When I was touring parade homes last year, some master baths had whirlpool tubs without much deck, and they really looked squeezed in, making the bathroom look crowded rather than spacious. In my mind it was a detractor to the look of the room. Of course it does make a difference how the rest of the room is. If it's a small room to start with, and a tub with a small deck is to scale with the rest, then you'll be ok.

I'll differ slightly in my opinion. I prefer to have the cement board stop above the tub's flange. That way the flange doesn't cause the cement board to "kick out" or flare. That kicking out can later result in the bottom course of tile kicking out into the tub. When the tile is set, the bottom course of tile overhangs the bottom of the cement board, but it is held above the tub deck by roughly the width of a grout joint. The gap between the tile and the tub is later caulked. So...the tub sits tight to the framing, the cement board is held slightly above the tub's flange, and the tile overhangs the bottom of the cement board and the bottom course of tile is held slightly off the tub deck. My bathtub has integrated grab bars. I would use the side of the tub or tub wall unless I was so decrepit I couldn't straighten from bending over without help. Then I would install more grab bars. But honestly, your well used gym membership is a better investment in aging in place at this point. The integrated grab bars are useful because the tub is so deep that I just about float in it. :) They make sliding down and up surprisingly easier. And unlike the elbow shelves in my Kohlers, they don't make cleaning a pain.
