Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

Redoing a 70's kitchen

My house was built in the 70's. I have an open kitchen, dining, living room that go the length of the house (open). The trim in my house is wood. My kitchen cabinets are true 70's with a blue laminate countertop. What style and color cabinets can I use to update this tired kitchen? I have no backsplash on the sink wall but hideous wallpaper on the stove wall. and pantry wall. The pantry cabinets are on the wall opposite the sink wall. I'd like to reconfigure the pantry as well. Thanks for any help you can give!

You could do white gloss slab cabinets. Or a wood like cherry or walnut in a slab. You need something that works with the age and era of the home.

It’s already open to the family room, it really doesn’t need to have your dirty dishes on display to the rest of the world. The flooring is great! And you say 70’s like it’s a bad thing, which it isn’t. Retro is very in. You just need new materials and a new layout. Place the range on the wall where the fridge is located. The fridge goes across the aisle. The island turns into a peninsula between the kitchen and family room. It will feel far more open, and you can have seating for family sociability.

A couple of pullout pantries in that wire rack spot wouldn't be so difficult to access while cooking. Load your bottom cabinets with drawers to increase efficiency and accessibility. Uppers to the ceiling with only 8' will not improve the feeling of your small space. Sink your budget into drawers and pullouts and keep the open feeling above the counters to increase the feeling of space. Feature a hood for your stove and great tile to the ceiling at that end of the room for a good looking focal point. Leave the garage door where it is but put a true counter depth fridge where you micro cart is. That will be convenient for snackers to access without trespassing into your work area.

If you really want help here post a to scale plan nothing in the space except where the windows and doorways are . Where the doorways lead and all meaurements clearly marked and also the sizes of your appliances since I never design a kitchen until the client has chosen appliances and better yet those appliances are already in the garage waiting. IMo lower tha dividinwall to 36" and put in a nice set of drwer cabinets there but I nned the whole plan to scale and the easy way is to use graph paper.

Yeah, I think you should gut and start over, in which case you can do anything you like. Start by talking to a kitchen designer, who can help you rearrange and/or tailor the space to fit your needs -- if your budget is tight, get a free design session at Lowes or Ikea, just to help you think things through and see what's possible. (I suspect the first move would be to put the fridge on the pantry wall, giving the stove some elbow room!) You'll be in better shape after that to worry about things like style.

I also agree to look into a kitchen designer (even if it's just Ikea). The layout needs a few tweaks to improve functionality.

I'm assuming you are asking these questions because you are gutting this kitchen. At this point, nearly any door style and color will be a welcomed update. As someone already suggested, Ikea cabinets offer great cost-effective and current day styles with the option of a kitchen planner. I would also consider removing the carpet from the kitchen and adding tile or hardwood.
