open floor plan ideas with decor and layout

I am really struggling with my open floor plan and making it have a warm modern feel with decorating the walls with the right art. I could use major help with any ideas for the accent wall with the bare tv and what to place on the stand underneath it as well as any ideas for table lamps and window treatments which would pop the room more. I am thinking maybe larger white lamps and white curtains but really don’t have a sense of style. Any help or advice for wall decor, window treatments, throw pillows, or furniture layout would be greatly appreciated! :)

Lower the TV to a height that is actually comfortable to view on. The console looks like it needs to be longer too. It should be about 50% longer than the TV. The TV, when wall hung, usually hovers just above the console so nothing really goes on there.

It seems odd to me that no seating is facing the TV. I would try to move one of the couches so that it actually faces it.

I don't think the paint color goes with your furnishings either. Your couches appear to be a cool gray, as do your blue accents, but the brown/tan walls are clashing with that. A cooler paint, or warmer slipcovers for the couches, would work.

White curtains seems like they would add some softness to the room so I say go for that, but also consider some of the changes I suggested. You're almost there!

Thank you so much for the wonderful feedback! The builder actually messed up and placed the cables up high on the wall so I️ am looking into having them pulled out lower :)

What color slip covers and throw pillows would you recommend? Light cream? For when we replace those couches, what color would you recommend the cloth be where it wouldn’t clash? We have pets so we try to stay away from overly light- white- decor :) :)

    Thank you again!!!

Very open floor plan - decorating with rugs questions

    Q

    Comments (8)
Bonnie, I have an open floor plan from the LR to the DR. They are right across from each other and only separated by a walking path to the FR. I live in a 2300 sq. ft townhouse. I have wood floors going through 90% of my home. I don't follow many rules of thumbs when decorating but for this one: with solid wood tables use a solid rug. With a glass table always use a patterned rug. You don't have to have a rug in every room. Here is the reason: A glass table can be seen thru and you can actually view the beauty of a patterned rug at any angle. You can't do that with a wood table. Besides, wood tables give a warm feeling on their own. My feelings for eating areas is to use no rug since crumbs (people have the tendency to step on them once they drop) and spills do happen. But that's me. Many on this forum would disagree.

Losing the verticals will help a lot. They're practical but that's about it. I did see the sideboard in the model pictures but putting furniture in a space for looks versus practicality and function can sometimes be two different things. The width of your dining table top will also determine whether or not you can manage a sideboard. How wide is it?

Agreed! I figured I would get lamps once I come up with a good furniture arrangement and actually figure out what accent chairs/additional seating, and coffee table and/or side tables I should put in.

    he TV is too high.

Hi, Kris. The room isn't bad, but the TV wall absolutely must be fixed. It's your focal wall and it's totally out of balance. Your first priority should be lowering the TV and getting a longer console to ground it.

Then I think we can tighten the color palette to make everything hang together better. Right now you don't have any dominant color and no accent color for spice. Let me see what I can do.

    Thank you!!

Here is a wider shot of the room which shows the French door curtains and a current color of grommet blinds and a picture of the colors in the carpet. Not sure if this blue even goes and if not it can of course be changed :). :)

    Thank you guys!!!!!

The first thing I'd do (after taking care of the TV wall) is change the slipcover on the right sofa to match the one on the left. If you want to keep the tree art, add a couple of pillows in the same yellow as the background of the piece. If you'd like to add more color and contrast, change the art and get pillows to match. (I chose blue since you show it in your ideabook and your rug seems to have a tiny hint of bluish gray.)

What would you think about adding a contemporary wall unit or built-ins to go on the tv wall to help make it the focal wall that groveraxle is talking about? In addition to your tv and components, It could incorporate space for books, art, and other special collected items.

Here’s a few examples to start with:

Can I get a good designing software

    Hi DH!

Thank you for looking at the posts!

I am not a huge fan of the wall units and was trying to think what else would possibly make that wall the focal point besides that solution. Do people still stone up the middle of a wall or is that out of style lol.

The living room is narrow and longer so it is making it quite difficult to come up with any other arrangement for the exiting furniture. Down the road we can swap the furniture out but I would like some help to spice up the room with the current couches since we unfortunately just bought them :( I have a picture attached of the floor plan if that is of any help. It’s just such an awkward space size for me to even be able to know what to do with it for now I feel it’s boring and lifeless.

We are going to drop the tv- would art or tiered shelving with candles and little pieces of art look odd? Any other ideas for that focal wall?

Would you swap the end tables and lamps and rearrange and possibly add a hanging light fixture in the middle of the recessed lighting? Aghhhhh this is frustrating and I am so glad for the advice and altered pictures :)

Any advice on window treatments? Blue and white or just white? Full curtain with a tie or just one that goes around the top and sides as an accent? I’m lost with the entire room obviously lol

Thanks for posting your floor plan. That’s actually helpful. The room we are discussing is your living room on the floor plan, is that correct? And is your floor plan actually inverse of the one you posted? I’m trying to get myself oriented By looking at where the windows are.

Let’s worry about window treatments after you have figured out a a few things: a new tv console, matching sofa covers or remove them altogether (your furniture layout is symmetrical, so different colored covers is not looking as good as it could), and I think we need to address the tree art with the golden yellow background. Currently, the tree art is an outlier because the color is not repeated elsewhere in the room, and it doesn’t contain colors that are being used in the rest of the room. For your best look, you’ll need to bring in some golden tones into the space, or switch out the art and use that piece in another room. Groveraxle did a great job mocking up those 2 options for you.

A couple of things to consider: adding more blues will not warm up your space. Blue is a cool color, and creates a sense of peacefulness, but not warmth. In your original post, you state that you want a warm, modern space. To do that you will need to add warm colors like yellow, orange, and red. They can be muted like a brick red, or paler like a coral or salmon color, or like the soft golden color of the color in the tree art. To keep it modern, look for a tv console with clean, classic lines, but I don’t think ultra-modern will work either I would suggest a contemporary or transitional style console.

I’ll start looking for ideas on how to make a tv wall a focal point without using built ins or a wall unit. Bbl

I think the reason the couches look like different colors is because of the pet covers she has on them.

Kris, it looks to me like you are talking about the family room on the floorplan. Is that correct? without a fireplace? I like your blue drapes very much and think blue with brown can make a warm and cozy room. I'm not sure about curtains for the two windows--there doesn't look like there is much space around the couch. Have you tried placing one couch at 90 degrees to the other? like others have suggested.

Hi! Yes that Living room is our office and is walled off in our home now. The room which we are looking at now is the family room that is open to the kitchen :)

I️ think I️ will move that yellow tree painting into the office or dining room as you guys are right that it doesn’t go well at all.... I️ like the idea of finding a framed painting with blues within it as Grover has shown above. Also am going to be swapping out the throw covers for a brown or grey and getting pillows. What color throw pillows would you recommend?

If you have time to create a few pictures on the accent wall and room with using blue hues that would be greatly appreciated! This has already helped so very much!! Thank you all!

Start with a new longer TV stand and lower the TV to meet it. Find some art you love for over the sofa and use it to inform a couple of new throw pillows.

I agree 100% with groveraxle on the way to get started.

In addition, I’ve been thinking a lot about the appearance of your living room being so long and narrow. I think something that helps create that feeling is the darker color on the back wall. Generally, dark colors feel like they recede, and light colors tend to come forward, so with the darker tv wall, it makes the room seem longer and narrower than it actually is.

If that doesn’t bother you, then it’s not really an issue. But if it’s something that you’d like to address, I’d suggest that you paint that wall the same colors as all your other walls. Or, do something interesting with that wall to create a stronger focal point, and do it in such a way that wall seems to come forward a little bit, or even helps to make the room feel wider.

You had mentioned earlier the idea about adding some stone to the wall, you could also use wood, tile, or wallpaper, depending on what appeals to you most. I don’t know if the stone is considered out dated or not, but I was certainly able to find sample photos of it here on Houzz, and if you love the look, I don’t think it matters if it’s “in” or “out” because trends always cycle around, and some of the best designers are brilliant because they know when to break the rules. If you don’t have a fireplace, I think a stone wall could be an outstanding choice.

Here are a few looks for your consideration:

This one features a full wall of stone, but see how nicely the paint color echoes the color of the stone, so the attention is drawn to that wall because of it’s texture. You could get a similar look with wallpaper or a subtle stencil design if you don’t want to do stone. I think there’s too many floating shelves here, but one or two on each side of your tv could be a nice place to display some smaller art, candlesticks, glass vases/art, a collection of some kind, and/or small scale plants. Notice how tall the drapes are to create greater height in the room?

This one is probably close to what you were referring to about a center column of stone on the wall. Notice how it comes into the room by a few inches and the sides are finished. It feels like a fireplace. One of the special things about this design is the warm lighting under the floating console which keeps the look very modern.

With the raised wood (bamboo I think) panels and strong horizontal lines of this wall treatment, this really expands the feeling of width in the room. And with this look, you need almost no ornamentation.

And this one I included, just to show you how gorgeous a console can be all on it’s own. The style of this look is timeless and will never go out of style. And again, styling of the console is very simple. Just a low round bowl of what looks like one kind of succulents. Very clean and modern, but very organic feeling too.

Let us know what look appeals to you, or post some other photos that you’re inspired by. The better we understand what your tastes are, the more helpful we can be. :-)

I️ absolutely love the first and second pictures posted! I️ am not familiar with wall paper that looks like stone on the wall. Could you tell me the name of that so I️ can start taking a look at the stores. I️ also love the faux stone in the center of the wall as shown in the second picture- I️ am thinking the first option may be more within budget. What color would you select for both options?

Below are some pictures of decor I️ have found. What do you guys think about the colors?

I️ also love how the curtain in the first picture elongates the wall!

I️ apologize for the question marks! Those are meant to be “I “.

I like the first and third options that are abstract and have a lot of neutrals in them in addition to some blue. I like the first piece quite a bit, as an abstracted landscape, but I don’t like the square shape for over your couch. I think a better shape would be a horizontal rectangle, or two squares, if needed.

i don’t think I was specifically thinking of a faux stone wallpaper, although I do think those exist, but wallpaper, instead of stone, that would give you some subtle texture like a stone wall would. Does that make sense?

I’ll look for some samples to help illustrate what I mean. Bbl

Here’s a link to wallpapers that have some sort of stone look to them. Just search results, so I’m not recommending any particular one, just sharing what I was able to find. I would shop locally to get large swatches first to make sure it will coordinate well with your current wall color. I think something that is very close in tone to your lighter wall color would be best, but you may prefer something different.

And here’s a few samples of wallpapers that have a nice texture/design to them, without being faux stone:

I think this is a grass cloth (or an embossed wallpaper to look like grass cloth).

This one has a more linen-like texture

This is not at all what I’m thinking for your space, but it does nicely illustrate the concept of having the walls and the wallpaper be essentially the same color, but with the wallpaper having some kind of pattern or texture to make it more of a feature wall.
